Executive summary
2008 one of the worst years for tourism
In 2008, the slump in the value of the US dollar led to a drop in arrivals from the US, the largest market for the country’s travel and tourism industry. Many of the hotels and pensions in Bora Bora, Tahiti and Moorea had a hard time maintaining healthy occupancy rates. Car rental and tour operators also experienced a decline in their profit margins.
US and Japanese visitor numbers drop with the US dollar
The drop in the value of the US dollar made French Polynesia an expensive destination for US and Japanese visitors. Pension and hotel operators saw their room rates rise by at least 20% in US dollar terms despite keeping the same rates in their own currency. Americans chose to travel to Asia and the Caribbean where airfares and accommodation costs were lower. The Japanese, on the other hand, preferred to stay at home as their domestic economy weakened.
The international air market remains an oligopoly
Although there are five international airlines that fly to Papeete, there is not enough competition among them. Each region or country is only served by one airline, except for France and the US. Most of the airlines have a monopoly on their flight paths and hence their passengers. Unlike in other countries, potential visitors to French Polynesia have a limited number of airlines to choose from.
Future looks uncertain for travel and tourism industry
Operators have never before felt so uncertain about the future of their business. This lack of confidence is attributed to a decline in visitor arrivals and the slowdown in the economy of its largest market, the US. The future is also uncertain as Europe’s economy could also slow down. The political instability in French Polynesia is another factor contributing to the lack of business confidence among operators.
