Executive summary

A turbulent year for air transportation

Whilst a new accord between the UK and Spain – the Cordoba Agreement – has given Gibraltar the opportunity to receive flights and passengers directly from Spain and EU Member States other than the UK, Gibraltar has seen the cancellation of services from both Heathrow and Manchester. Moreover, GB Airways, one of the two airlines which initiated services between Madrid and Gibraltar is closing the route and Iberia is substituting smaller aircraft.

Day tourism dominates the travel and tourism industry

To date, Gibraltar remains heavily dependent on day excursionists, either by land or cruise, to generate tourist expenditure within its borders. The bulk of tourism expenditure is on shopping, although there are a significant number of tourists who undertake escorted excursions or visit tourist attractions under their own steam. Nonetheless, until a significant network of routes into Gibraltar can be developed, the heavy reliance on day tripper expenditure is likely to continue.

Lifestyle changes influence overnight tourism

Whilst 20 years ago, Gibraltar used to see tourists stay for the better part of a week, the average stay has since declined so that Gibraltar now resembles a city break destination rather than a coastal resort in terms of tourists’ holiday length. Clearly, this reduction in “commitment” by visitors has made tourist expenditure more subject to the vagaries of daytrippers who, by definition, spend rather less per day than overnight visitors.

Gibraltar fails to meet its potential from sea-based tourism

At present, the only ferry service from Gibraltar is a twice weekly service to Tangiers. A relaxation of the tense relations between Gibraltar and Spain could see the introduction of ferries along the coast towards Malaga and especially across the bay to Algeciras. Most ferries from southern Spain to Morocco leave from Tarifa, often several times per day.
