Executive summary

Guyana is a country on the north coast of South America. To the north is the Atlantic Ocean, while the country shares its border with Suriname, Brazil and Venezuela. Geographically, Guyana can be divided into several major regions: a low-lying region with thick, fertile soil; a dense forest area in the South which makes up about four-fifths of the country; an interior mountainous region and yet another of savannahs. Rapids and falls in land make interior navigation difficult.

Guyana’s Rich Culture Promoted to Tourists.

Guyana's culture is a diverse mixture of races including Indian, African, European and native elements. This provides an interesting variety and depth of culture and cuisine. Tourists can explore a culture that is unique from both its South American and Caribbean neighbours.

Crime and Drug Trade a Lingering Deterrent to Tourism

Guyana still suffers from high crime rates as it is a trans-shipment point for many narcotics in the region. Tourists who would consider it as a destination are therefore often scared away by this potential danger. Related international warnings and advisories against travel cause further obstacles to attracting visitors. Violence is related to drug trafficking and gang violence, as well as money laundering; the assassination of Guyana’s agriculture minister, Satyadeow Sawh and television talk show host Ronald Waddell earlier this year are key examples of this.

Airline Industry in Guyana in Crisis

Air lift connections and the airline industry are in trouble in Guyana. Guyanese airline Universal Airlines closed down in 2005; and BWIA which flew frequently into Guyana was shut down. In addition, international oil prices have not helped the health of Guyanese or any airlines in general. The spate of violence in Guyana during the review period further decreased tourist or other passenger inflow into the country.
