Executive summary

Intraregional tourism benefits Honduras

Honduras has seen its inbound tourism increase, derived from the joint efforts of Central American countries to promote the region as a multidestination tourist area. The Central American Integration System (SICA) announced in July 2007 the approval of a US$2 million budget for promotional purposes in Europe. Better communication and road systems will be required in order to achieve tourism growth in the Central American region. Honduras is also a member of the Mayan World Organization, which signed an Open Skies agreement in August 2007 to guarantee full air connectivity between all Mayan attractions in Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Mexico. The participating governments are working on achieving this promise.

Honduras also benefited from intraregional tourism in 2007 when there was a boom in visitors from El Salvador, who drastically shifted their tourism preferences from Guatemala towards Honduras during the Easter holiday season. This phenomenon was a response to the assassination of three Salvadoran deputies in Guatemala in February 2007.

Airline travel is booming

After successful negotiations with the Honduras government, in April 2007 Spirit Airlines finally announced its new non-stop Fort Lauderdale-San Pedro Sula route starting in July 2007, which brightened the perspectives for the tourism industry. This is a great achievement for Honduras since its strongest competitors in the region, namely Costa Rica and Guatemala, already enjoy the benefits of Spirit Airlines’s services in their own airports. Additionally, Blue Panorama started flights between Roma and Roatán in April 2007, extending the possibility of inbound tourism in Honduras. Aeroméxico also announced its new Mexico City-San Pedro Sula route that started in June 2007, which is expected to increase visitor traffic between both countries.

Bahía de Tela is envisioned as the country’s leading tourism project

After joint efforts by the Inter-American Development Bank and the Honduras Tourism Institute to call for bids during 2006, Bahía de Tela was outlined as a major tourism project. In an area of 816 hectares, a world-class resort is being built, intended to be able to compete with similar establishments in Mexico and Costa Rica. Construction started in October 2007. The investment amounts to US$161.3 million, with the government owning a 49% share, of which 7% will be transferred to the local community. At the same time, the government is evaluating the possibility of building a four-lane highway in order to facilitate access to this region.
