Executive summary
Business as usual until second half of 2008
Growth in travel and tourism in the first half of 2008 was strong as the economy appeared to be performing well. Lower domestic consumer confidence, coupled with the onset of the global financial crisis which led to a weakening in demand from international arrivals, were the reasons behind much slower growth in the second half of the year. Hong Kong departures also dropped off significantly in the latter half of the year.
Government continues to build on global hub positioning
The Hong Kong government has a multi-pronged approach to achieving its goal of positioning Hong Kong as a leading global city, one which is an international transport, business, travel and shopping hub. All areas of the government’s focus are well integrated to achieving this goal. In 2008 the introduction of e-channels improved immigration efficiency for business arrivals.
High-profile airline boosts Chinese destinations
Cathay Pacific has focused on positioning itself as the leading airline to connect international arrivals with China and for the Chinese travelling to Hong Kong and abroad. In 2008 Cathay Pacific added numerous destinations to its network right across China. At the same time, the company withdrew from several less well performing routes, particularly to smaller US and European cities.
Travel e-commerce slow to be embraced
Full on-line purchasing has been slow to come to Hong Kong. Travel retailers have long offered consumers information, pricing and booking options on their websites, but it was not until late 2007 that the leading firm launched on-line payments for flight purchases. In 2008 other companies followed suit. These developments are likely to change the way consumers purchase and interact with travel retailers, but at a gradual pace.
China to make up tourism shortfall in the short term
International arrivals are not expected to see much movement in the coming two years, and in the short term arrivals from China are expected to carry much of the momentum in travel and tourism. The focus on Chinese arrivals will push demand for budget accommodation, as well as tours tailored towards Chinese visitors, and will also help give a much-needed boost to retail sales through shopping trips. Over the longer term, international arrivals are expected to increase, and demand for premium hotels will once again pick up.
