Executive summary

Growth in airlines and accommodation indicates stronger performance

Growing sales in airlines and accommodation was a reflection of growth in the wider travel and ourism industry. Encouraging arrival numbers from Western Europe and Asia revealed that more business travellers are making their way to Kazakhstan. More airline entrants and the presence of international hotel chains setting up bases in the country is looking to tap into the enormous potential of Kazakhstan’s tourism industry.

Cultural tourism takes precedence

Cultural tourism is prioritised to expand with the government acknowledging the pressing need to cultivate a sense of heritage among its citizens and at the same time promote cultural tourism as an appealing factor to inbound tourists. The government is engaging on various projects to tap into international expertise by engaging tourism experts in various fields to consult and construct cultural sites such as the Zhan Ile international tourist centre along the Kapshangi shore. Satellite cities are expected to benefit from the growth of cultural tourism.

International hotel chains emerge

International hotel chains are increasing their presence on Kazakhstan soil with more hotels planned during the forecast period. Business travellers have encouraged five-star hotels to flourish due to the costly room rates, and these hotels dominate the competitive landscape. There is a dearth of mid-range affordable accommodation for domestic and leisure tourists. Rixos Almaty opened in November 2008 with the Hilton and Marriott hotels chains looking to establish a stronger presence in Central Asia within the next couple of years.

Online transactions on the up

Online transactions continue to grow. The bulk of Internet transactions are made by foreign travellers with a very small number made by locals. International hotel chains have sparked this trend of online booking facilities. Internet access has grown throughout the two main cities Almaty and Astana although locals still prefer to make payments through more conventional channels. Online transactions for air travel are forecasted to record double-digit annual growth to 2013.

Tourism trade set to grow

With stronger flight connections and regional airlines looking to increase frequency of flights into Kazakhstan, greater accessibility will encourage more leisure travellers. Tourists from India and the Middle East are expected to be among the fastest growing groups of leisure travellers over the forecast period. Kazakhstan is growing to be key country to visit given its natural landscape and with its tourism board looking aggressively to promote tourism to Europeans, accommodation and travel retail sales look set to boom over the forecast period.
