Executive summary
Strong 2008 growth driven by infrastructure investments
Slovenian tourism had a good year in 2008, recording robust tourism receipt and travel accommodation value growth. A major factor behind this strong performance was the improvement in hotel infrastructure in the country thanks to substantial investment. Whilst growth is expected to stagnate in 2009 as a result of the global economic downturn, this investment should ensure healthy growth from 2010 onwards.
Higher per capita expenditure fuels growth in tourism receipts
The adoption of the Euro, the scraping of border controls as a result of Slovenia’s entrance into the Schengen zone, and increased interest in the country due to its recent holding of the rotating EU presidency have all made travelling to Slovenia much easier and more desirable in recent years. In particular, the adoption of the Euro has helped to fuel sharp growth in tourism receipts. This trend is expected to continue over the forecast period, with arrivals and incoming tourist receipts projected to increase at average annual rates of 4% and 6%. Tourists arriving to Slovenia in the 2008-2013 period are expected to stay longer and spend more as the country establishes itself as a desirable destination for higher income travellers.
Investment drive to continue
Thanks to, partially EU funded, government subsidies, which are aimed at improving tourism and general infrastructure in the country, the Slovenian travel and tourism industry is currently experiencing record levels of investment. The investment drive is expected to continue until 2013, by which time the country’s tourism infrastructure should be very competitive. These investments are mainly aimed at improving the quality of services in order to help attract higher income travellers.
Internet reservations steadily gaining ground
The fact that Slovenia is a traditional destination for independent travellers means that the increasing popularity and availability of internet reservation services will help to boost inbound tourist numbers over the forecast period. Although, the largest tourism companies are still highly reliant on traditional booking channels, this situation is expected to change gradually over the coming years, with the importance of online sales expected to increase within all travel and tourism segments.
Robust growth predicted for the forecast period
The fact that Slovenia is located in the heart of Central Europe means that it is very easy to reach for tourists from the main European tourist markets such as Germany, Italy, and France and emerging markets in Eastern Europe. In addition, the fact that EU tourists no longer need to have a passport or exchange money to enter the country will also help to boost tourist numbers over the forecast period. The quality of services and infrastructure in the country is improving fast and substantial investments are also being made in marketing Slovenia as a tourist destination. As a result, Slovenia is very much an emerging tourist destination and still has significant potential for further growth both in terms of number of arrivals and incoming tourism expenditure.
