Executive summary

Global warming continues to pose a threat

Tuvalu continues to lose land to the rising sea levels caused by global warming. Tourism is therefore under threat. The prediction is that the island nation will be submerged in 30-50 years.

Accommodation sector eyes individual tourists from Japan and Europe

Individual tourists from Japan and Europe are said to be a potential growth market. Operators who have served these clients before have noted their keen interest in the natural environment and well-preserved conservation area in Tuvalu. They are also attracted to the country’s war relics, philatelic products and handicrafts.

Air Pacific plans new service to Tuvalu in 2008

The government of Tuvalu has welcomed the plan of Air Pacific to operate flights to the country, which were scheduled to start sometime between April and June 2008. Currently, air travel to and from the country is provided by Air Fiji only twice a week.

2008 prospects partly dependent on Fiji’s recovery

Considering that the flights to Tuvalu are all from Fiji, it is very likely that Fiji’s recovery from the 2006 coup would also benefit Tuvalu. The slowdown in tourist arrivals in Fiji due to the coup meant that fewer travellers from overseas are visiting Fiji, which, in turn, also reduces the number of tourists who are likely to visit Tuvalu. Visitors tend to stay for a few days in Fiji before travelling to Tuvalu. This means that if tourist arrival numbers in Fiji do not improve, then arrivals in Tuvalu will also be low.
