Executive summary
Resilient growth in 2008
Travel and tourism remained resilient in 2008 despite the gloomy global economic climate. Consumer confidence in Finland only lowered in the final quarter of 2008 with many Finns having already spent their increased disposable income on travel and tourism in the summer. Inbound tourism continued to grow albeit at lower levels with Russian tourist numbers remaining phenomenally high.
Domestic tourism key to positive growth in 2008
Domestic tourism grew strongly in 2008 while inbound growth was weaker than previous years. Domestic tourism accounts for nearly three quarters of all tourist revenue, thus making a key component of the Finnish tourist industry. Accommodation, transportation and particularly tourist attractions are dependent on domestic tourism remaining strong.
Tourist attractions and travel retail achieve strong growth
Tourist attractions recorded the highest growth, benefiting from strong domestic tourism with travel retail also achieving good growth as many Finns booked holidays abroad, particularly long haul destinations.
Internet travel purchases continue to rise
Internet travel purchases which had been strong in 2007, continued to record double-digit growth in 2008. Online travel retailers are the most dynamic growing businesses within the tourist industry, as more and more Finns switch to searching for holidays and trusting online payment security.
Recession will dampen growth
Given that the current global and Finnish economy are in recession, lower levels of growth for the tourist industry are expected with some sectors even entering negative growth. Business travel has already lowered, thus lowering profit, particularly in the transport sector such as airlines and even travel retail. Leisure travel is also expected to decline with consumers tightening their belts and cutting back on less essential purchases, such as travel.
