Executive summary

Economic downturn slowdown in arrivals

2008 was one of the less than rosy years for the travel and tourism industry in many countries. Singapore saw a slowdown in the number of inbound visitor arrivals from many countries as the global economic outlook portrayed gloomy times ahead. Consumers are beginning to cut down on travel as recession looms and the price of fuel surcharges among other items rockets upwards. Outbound travel from Singapore remained surprisingly strong as growth rates continued to climb steadily from their 2007 levels. Singaporeans are still travelling overseas for their holidays despite the weak economy and rising unemployment rate.

Short-haul holidays on the increase

Singaporeans are slowly shifting away from taking extended annual vacations to long haul destinations such as the US and Europe to nearby regional destinations such as Thailand and Hong Kong. Short haul travel is the latest trend among those Singaporeans wishing to go on holiday despite the global credit crisis. This allows consumers not only to travel as usual but also to take more than one annual holiday trip thanks to the lower costs involved and shorter annual leave required.

Singapore Flyer rides on the Formula One wave

New attractions in 2008 such as the Formula One night race and the Singapore Flyer have provided a boost to the competitive environment. The Singapore Flyer advertised extensively among fans of Formula One racing in order to have them visit the attraction since it offers a bird’s-eye view of the Formula One night race event held in and around the marina area.

Internet channel becomes more significant

Booking channels for travel and tourism services are extensive both online and offline. As part of the digital age, Singaporeans are rapidly adapting to the trend of conducting transactions online, including planning and booking holidays. Hotels, flights and car rental are readily available from travel agencies through their websites or from online travel agencies such as Zuji Travels Pte Ltd.

Integrated Resorts to help recover tourism arrivals in the future

Given the current economic outlook, Singapore is expected to see slower growth in inbound tourism during the immediate future. The weak economy will take its toll on consumer spending. However, when new attractions such as the two planned integrated resorts – the Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa – open their doors in 2010 a higher number of visitor arrivals to Singapore can be expected to coincide with an improvement in the global economy.
