Executive summary
A milestone year for the Philippines
For the first time in years, the Philippines exceeded its target tourist arrivals for the year. Its flagship campaign “WOW Philippines” has finally earned its rewards combined with a more stable economy and political environment. Furthermore, the country shifted its focus to the diversity of the Philippines more than just promoting it as a tropical destination. The Department of Tourism (DOT) has likewise initiated country specific promotions to better capture the potential of the market. It expects a milestone for the next three years before the Arroyo administration ends its reign, with five million arrivals. However more conservative projections reveal that the government may offshoot by two years.
Infrastructure development on the rise
With high expectations of the tourism industry and a milestone year that will hopefully start a milestone decade, the problem with the lack of infrastructures was further highlighted. 2005 was a groundbreaking year in several ways, including the start of multi-million dollar hotel developments along SM Bay City and Boracay among others and the expansion of LCC routes. Minor setbacks occurred with the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources issuing sanctions on certain developments stopping further construction.
The “Koreanization” of tourism
South Korea leads the Philippine tourist arrivals for this year, slightly higher than the US visitor arrivals that topped the list previously. Korea’s arrivals are mostly attributed to the “English as a Second Language Centres” across the nation with the National Capital Region and Cebu being identified as the most popular destinations. However, the local travel retailer has been losing revenue to Korean travel agencies operating in the market. Korean investment in future hotel and spa developments is also apparent in the country.
LCC reach new heights
The Low Cost Carrier Segment continues to experience growth, with its price cutbacks being the main crowd puller. Route expansions, both local and foreign, have been apparent for all carriers to accommodate the growing interest in inbound and outbound tourism. Re-fleeting and fleet expansion is likewise a common move among all carriers. It suffered a minor setback with some fleets unable to fly to its new routes owing to the lack of reciprocal flights from country of destination. Open skies remain a dream as the carriers believe that it will create unfair competition.
Health and wellness; the Philippines’ next big market
The country currently ranks fifth in Asia as a health and wellness destination. However, the year’s development efforts on health and wellness have made it the fastest growing industry under travel and tourism. Top hospitals together with the travel agencies, tour operators and the Philippine government have all join forces to take advantage of the growing health and wellness market. The Philippines has a competitive advantage given its world class medical professionals and relatively lower cost of medical services. On the spa side, the Philippines traditional massage, known as hilot, is being developed and marketed as the newest universally accepted massage therapy.
