About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Car rental value sales increased by 2% in 2012, reaching ¥300 billion. The growth was driven by the increasing demand for domestic travel in Japan. In 2012, the number of domestic tourists increased by 1% to reach 290 million trips. Car rental is a preferred form of transport once arriving at a travel destination. While the number of young people owning cars in Japan decreased strongly, the preference is to use public transportation such as trains, buses, and airlines to visit the tourist spots and rent cars to drive around the surrounding areas.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Toyota Rent-a-Lease remains the leading car rental company in 2012, with 32% of total transaction value. The company holds the largest fleet of cars and outlets throughout Japan. In April 2012, Toyota Rent-a-Lease established a new hybrid class for rent and revised the recommended price of car rentals which applied to 63 outlets nationwide. The last price revision was implemented in April 2003. Whilst more consumers became interested in eco-friendly vehicles and driving hybrid vehicles including Toyota Prius, the company realised the importance of adding hybrid cars for rent with reasonable prices to meet consumers’ needs.

PROSPECTS

  • Car rental is expected to continue growing by a CAGR of 2% in constant value terms over the forecast period. As large amounts of money are needed to own cars, the number of car owners in Japan is expected to continue declining in favour of renting a car when needed. Also, the number of airline passengers is expected to continue growing thanks to the expanding air routes by low-cost carriers.
