About this Report

Executive Summary

  • Segmentation continued to be the focal point for car rental during 2014. All the major players focused on a wider offer and more intense promotion of, for example, luxury cars, environmentally-friendly cars and family cars. Hertz, for example, promoted its environmentally-friendly Green Collection and exclusive Hertz Prestige Collection. Luxury cars such as BMW 520 and Tesla Model S have increased in popularity among leisure and business travellers. Many customers want to enhance the experience of car rental by hiring a car that they would not normally drive. The environmentally-friendly luxury car Tesla Model S was by far the most popular luxury car in Norway during 2014. Hertz continued to increase its Tesla Model S fleet in 2014, with three new cars added in January 2015.

  • Car rental in Norway is predicted to develop at a stable pace; growing by a 1% value at constant 2014 prices over the forecast period. Business car rental is expected to register higher value sales than leisure car rental as the leading players seek to promote more value-added alternatives, such as environmentally-friendly and exclusive cars. In addition, brands like Hertz have developed car pools for companies, making it possible for employees to take public transport or cycle to work and still have the opportunity to use a car for meetings during the day. Car pools are also available for leisure customers, mainly aimed at Norwegians living in larger cities. According to Hertz, one car pool vehicle replaces 9-13 privately-owned cars. The continued development of car-pooling could result in notably higher sales among Norwegians. Traditionally, inbound tourists account for the majority of car rental sales in the country.
