About this Report

Executive Summary

  • Car rental witnessed slightly slower growth in 2014 when compared to the review period. One of the key seasons for car rental activity is during the summer when domestic travelling peaks owing to longer school holidays. However, this was affected by the shifting of Ramadan to the peak summer period of July and August in 2014. Most Saudis prefer not to travel during Ramadan except for pilgrimage travel to Makkah and Madinah. This trend slowed down domestic travel with growth in the number of trips much slower than in 2013. Since car rental is largely driven by domestic leisure tourists, the reduced domestic travel eventually resulted in the sluggish growth of car rental in 2014.

  • Leisure car rental is expected to continue to see stronger growth than business car rental in the forecast period, increasing at a constant 2014 value CAGR of 2%. Although the country’s economic prospects look good, in order to save costs the business community is expected to shift more towards long-term lease options which are now offered by various car rental companies, instead of short term rentals. Leisure tourists, however, will continue to be the main source of demand for car rental. The Ramadan season is expected to move out of the summer holidays, which will restore the demand from domestic tourists. In addition to this, short holiday breaks on Eid as well as on weekends will continue to drive sales of leisure car rental.
