About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Saudi Arabia, despite its widespread and high-quality road network, lacks acceptable levels of public transport infrastructure. The only forms of public transport currently available are taxis and buses, with the former being used more frequently than the latter, mostly by women, as they are not allowed to drive. The government has until now failed to properly plan and work on a public transport system that can ease the pressure on the highly congested roads in urban areas. There are no rail networks to connect the major cities in the country. The Haramain rail project, which is to connect the three major cities of Jeddah, Makkah and Medina, is currently facing delays. Many expatriates and the low-income population travel by the intercity bus system run by government’s Saudi Public Transport Company (SAPTCO). However, most Saudis and middle-income expatriates prefer to travel by car, and due to the harsh weather conditions and long distances, their preference is to rent a car. Widespread availability and affordability also favour this option. Thus, car rental continued to see strong growth in 2013.

PROSPECTS

  • Both business and leisure car rental are expected to show impressive performances in the forecast period, with value CAGRs of 2% at constant 2013 prices. Business car rental will benefit from the bright prospects for the Saudi economy, as it is expected to perform well in the forecast period. The Saudi government is making strong efforts to attract foreign investment, with projects such as King Abdullah Economic City, where recently giant confectionery manufacturer Mars GCC recently opened a production plant. Increased business activity will eventually lead to growth in demand for business car rental.
