  • Car rental remained driven by business car rental, although leisure car rental was also important to the category. Most car rental companies continued to attribute their success to consistent bookings from corporates throughout the year, whilst leisure bookings tended to be seasonal. Business car rental bookings were mainly influenced by events such as meetings and conferences attended by business travellers throughout the year. Business car rentals represented a 51% retail value share in 2014, with the remainder from leisure bookings, which reach peak levels during the summer season when the tourist influx is at its highest.

PROSPECTS

  • Demand for car rental services in South Africa is expected to be mainly driven by corporate bookings over the forecast period as was the case in the past. Leisure car rental bookings are likely to remain supplemental to business bookings as they tend to be highly driven by growth in international arrivals, as local consumers often make use of their own cars or those of their friends in other parts of the country for leisure travel.
