About this Report

Executive Summary

  • With continued strong urbanisation, congestion taxes, high living costs and a low availability of parking spaces, car sharing services, such as car rental and carpooling, have continued to grow. More and more Swedes are moving to the big cities in Sweden, as better jobs and services are available there. With this comes increased congestion and higher living costs, as purchasing or renting an apartment becomes more expensive due to increased demand. Swedes are prioritising other expenses over owning a car, hence services such as car rental and carpooling are becoming more popular for making a weekend trip or grocery purchases.

  • Car rental online intermediaries are projected to see the best performance over the forecast period, with a 4% CAGR in constant value terms. This growth does, however, come from a rather low base, as car rental online intermediaries’ share of total car rental value sales was less than 9% in 2014. Swedish consumers’ are set to increase their use of online booking of car rental services over the forecast period, but the usage of intermediaries is still seen as a rather new thing. Not many Swedes have knowledge of intermediaries, and they tend to go to each car rental company’s website to find the best deals, or book the car through a package or via a hotel booking site. Among the car rental players present in the Swedish market, Hertz and Avis are expected to perform best over the forecast period. Hertz’s position will be supported by its being the leading and an award-winning company that is at the forefront when it comes to new service solutions. Avis has gained a more powerful and centralised owner in Scandinavia, and will have greater resources to take on Hertz.
