About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Car rental remained under pressure during 2013 and faced a further decline in value sales. The decline in the numbers of domestic tourists and travellers was one major reason for this. Another reason was the fact that growth in inbound travel was focused mainly on major cities such as Amsterdam. This often means that inbound tourists do not hire a car when travelling in the Netherlands as driving is highly impractical in Amsterdam. Another major reason for the decline recorded in car rental is the tendency of tourists and travellers to limit their budgets whilst travelling within the Netherlands. Car rental is one of the first elements to be removed from holiday budgets in order to save money. Towards the end of the review period, many tourists decided not to rent a car in order to save money, with many others deciding to limit the number of days they rent a car for, and others choosing to book more basic vehicles, which are generally cheaper.

PROSPECTS

  • Leisure car rental is expected to see a major recovery in the Netherlands over the forecast period. As the first signs of a genuine economic recovery are already evident in the Netherlands, business car rental is also already showing the first signs of steady growth during the forecast period. Leisure car rental, on the other hand, is only likely to begin recovering during 2015 as it will take longer for consumers in the Netherlands and other European countries to begin experiencing the positive effects of economic recovery. The majority of consumers are not yet convinced that they will experience any major improvement in their personal financial situations during the short term and for this reason they are likely to remain hesitant about booking rental cars during 2014. However, by 2015, leisure car rental is likely to begin recording the first genuine signs of recovery.
