TRENDS

  • The whole dairy industry in Belarus continues to move towards the formation of big, powerful holding companies. There is visible tendency to centre smaller dairy companies in regions on one big company. Thus, in 2013, Oshmyansky Syrzavod OAO and Smorgonskiye Molochniye Producty OAO became part of Lidsky MKK OAO; Berezinsky CZ OAO merged with Borisovski Molochny Kombinat OAO (another name for the company is Zdravushka-Milk OAO); and Kopylsky Maslosyr Zavod OAO, Lyubanski SK OAO and Kletsky Maslodelny Kombinat OAO merged with Slucky Syrodelny Kombinat OAO.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • The competitive environment is rather fragmented in cheese in Belarus and characterised by quite low brand recognition. However, Belarus has strong cheese manufacturers; it is one of the leading countries in the world in terms of cheese production. After Kopylsky Maslosyr Zavod and Lyubanski merged with Slucky Syrodelny Kombinat, it became the biggest cheese player in Belarus. In 2014, Slucky Syrodelny Kombinat leads with a 13% share of retail value sales.

PROSPECTS

  • Belarus will remain a big cheese manufacturer and exporter. Cheese will retain its important position in the market, as part of the daily basket of the majority of Belarusians. Modernisation will continue in the forecast period as leading companies have plans to increase their cheese production using modernised manufacturing facilities. For example, Kobrinsky Maslodelno-Syrodelny Zavod OAO started to build a new hard cheese production facility in the second half of 2013. The investment is valued at BYR110 billion. The opening of the new facility is scheduled for 2015. Meanwhile, Molochny Mir OAO plans to expand its cheese production capacity from 25 tonnes per day to 40 tonnes per day during the forecast period. The company is set to purchase new equipment worth BYR25 billion (US$2.8 million), including installation and commissioning.
