  • Cheese registered steady current value growth over the review period and continued to show steady growth in 2015. Current value growth within cheese was slightly lower in 2015 compared to 2014 which can be attributed to the pressure on the category from the rise of private label cheese. Discounters especially had a negative effect on value sales of cheese. However, strong value sales within spreadable processed cheese ensured positive current value growth within cheese in 2015.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Albert Heijn BV remains the leading player within cheese in value terms in 2015, with private label being big in cheese in the Netherlands. Together with other retailers, private label accounted for a 37% value share in 2015. Private label is able to offer good value for money to Dutch consumers, of whom many are not looking for premium brands at all. As Dutch consumers consume relatively large amounts of cheese per capita, they opt for cheaper cheese because it accounts for such a great chunk of their grocery budget.

PROSPECTS

  • Cheese is expected to show a positive and healthy CAGR of 2% in constant 2015 terms over the forecast period. This would be an improvement on the review period, with pre-packaged products and more exclusive products offering opportunities for manufacturers to add value to their products. Organic products also offer an opportunity for manufacturers to expand their value sales as these products have a higher average unit price. Organic cheese remains a niche area within the Netherlands, although it is expected to continue to record strong growth over the forecast period.
