  • The general trends in cigarettes did not change drastically in 2014. In fact, the category continued to register positive growth, albeit at a slightly slower pace due to price increases caused by the rising cost of cultivating and importing tobacco leaf and the anti-smoking campaigns being undertaken by the Algerian government.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • The Algerian tobacco industry is no longer a monopoly. The market was previously essentially controlled by the State-owned company SNTA, which is the local national producer of cigarettes; however, in recent years, international players such as British American Tobacco, Philip Morris, Imperial Tobacco and Japan Tobacco Inc have entered the country, either directly in the case of British market tobacco or through local company STAEM SpA in the case of the other three.

PROSPECTS

  • Growth in sales of cigarettes is expected to remain positive over the forecast period, with the category set to increase in volume at a CAGR of 2%. Nevertheless, recently introduced high taxes on tobacco, applicable from the start of 2015, and recent anti-smoking campaigns and strategies undertaken by the Algerian government are expected to suppress growth rates in cigarettes during the forecast period. Indeed, these factors are likely to have a relatively strong impact on the smoking population and therefore on cigarettes sales overall.
