Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • In 2013, cigarettes posted volume growth of 4% and current value growth of 9%. Cigarette smoking remained fashionable among youths and was also seen as a type of emancipation for women, albeit only in urban areas. In addition, widespread disregard of the smoking ban and the absence of government communication regarding health issues led to a rise in the smoking population and hence sales. Moreover, the prices of cigarettes remained low and so consumers did not have to seek out substitutes in other tobacco categories.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • The tobacco industry in Algeria used to be a monopoly, under the control of the state-owned company Société Nationale des Tabacs et Allumettes (SNTA). This was until 2001 when the market was opened up to private companies. In 2002, STAEM Algerie, a joint venture between SNTA and Emirati holding Arab Investors TA (AITA) and a private Algerian company, Sofinance, started to import various international brands, such as Marlboro, Winston and Gauloises. Then, in 2004, BAT started manufacturing in Algeria. In 2009, STAEM stopped importing and started manufacturing international cigarette brands under licence. However, in 2013, Arab Investors TA sold its 49% share in STAEM to Philip Morris for US$625 million.

PROSPECTS

  • Cigarettes is expected to post both a volume and value CAGR of 4% at constant 2013 prices over the forecast period. The absence of enforced legislation and only minor warnings on the dangers of smoking are expected to lead to a further rise in the smoking population, particularly among women, resulting in stronger demand for all cigarette categories but particularly mid and low tar variants.
