TRENDS

  • The cigarettes market in Algeria remained unchanged in 2012 with no major fluctuations from manufacturers or importers. The female smoking population continued to increase faster than the males, but still generated minor sales compared to the male smokers. The disregard for smoking bans and controls ensured that sales continued growing in spite of them.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • The tobacco market used to be a monopoly in Algeria with the manufacturer and state-owned company Société Nationale des Tabacs et Allumettes (SNTA). This was until 2001 when the market was opened to private companies. In 2002, Société des Tabacs Algéro-Emirati (STAEM), a joint venture between the SNTA, private Emirati investors and a private Algerian company, Sofinance, started importing several international brands such as Marlboro, Winston and Gauloises. Then in 2004, British American Tobacco started manufacturing in Algeria. In 2009, STAEM stopped importing and started manufacturing international cigarette brands under licence.

PROSPECTS

  • Cigarettes is expected to record constant volume and value growth at a 3% CAGR over the forecast period. The positive growth will be essentially due to the fast development of mid- and low-tar cigarettes which will continue to grow from a small base at a fast pace. The smoking population is also expected to continue to grow, and faster amongst women than men.
