TRENDS

  • As a result of the uncertain economic climate, economy cigarette brands became more attractive to price-sensitive consumers. This was due to its cheaper pricing compared to mid-priced and premium brands. In addition, manufacturers repositioned some of their mid-priced brands to economy brands in order to leverage the rising demand for cheaper alternatives. For example, British American Tobacco (Singapore) Ltd and Philip Morris Singapore Pte Ltd lowered the pricing of Pall Mall and L&M and repositioned them as economy brands respectively.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Philip Morris Singapore Pte Ltd maintained its lead in cigarettes with a retail volume share of 49% in 2012. Marlboro, a premium brand, continued to be the leader in cigarettes with a high volume share of 34% as the brand led volume shares in high tar, mid tar and low tar cigarettes in 2012.

PROSPECTS

  • Over the forecast period, cigarettes is expected to post a retail volume CAGR of -2% to reach 2.4 billion sticks in 2017. Mid tar cigarettes will account for the highest volume CAGR of 9% to reach 2.3 billion sticks in 2017. High tar cigarettes will post a decline in volume growth of -83% in 2013 and will no longer be present thereafter. This is due to the regulation to reduce the tar level to below 10mg by March 2013. As a result, it will lead to a drastic shift from high tar to mid tar cigarettes over the forecast period.
