About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Cigar consumption increased in Costa Rica before and during the review period mainly due to a rise in travel and tourism, and an increase in the number of immigrants landing in Costa Rica, which helped to support premium cigars. Locals’ interest is growing in line with the acculturation process (globalisation), which is boosting more exclusive lifestyles. Emerging habits include “pairing”, wine consumption and Habanos clubs.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Cruz Canela & Trust GB SA led cigars in 2014 with 36% of retail volume sales. This distributor benefits from being the exclusive representative of the most recognised and traditional Cuban cigar brands available in the country (which include Cohiba, Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta and Partagás). It is noteworthy that the vast numbers of imitation Cuban cigar which are commonly found in food/drink/tobacco specialists make it difficult to estimate its real share.

PROSPECTS

  • Cigars is expected to register a retail volume CAGR of 5% and a retail value CAGR of 6% (constant 2014 prices) over the forecast period. Cigar performance is expected to continue to be dynamic as the local population continues to adopt the tobacco culture. The ongoing acculturation process (globalisation) and younger consumers’ habits and preferences will help to increase demand for such differentiated products. Moreover, as the global economy and inflow of tourists continue to improve, demand for different and specific cigars will help to boost sales.
