About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • In Singapore, cigars are generally looked upon as a luxury tobacco product for older and more affluent consumers. The consumer base for cigars also comprises expatriates and tourists from countries where cigar smoking is more popular. Cigars have a niche appeal and are much less popular than cigarettes not only because of their comparatively expensive prices, but also due to their stronger taste. However, cigar retailers in Singapore have observed a rising trend of more young adult consumers purchasing cigars, especially young adult male professionals. As rising disposable incomes have enabled such consumers to increase spending on luxury products, more of them have started smoking cigars.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Corporación Habanos SA maintained its commanding lead in cigars in 2014 with a retail volume share of 42%. Its leading position was due to the strong performances of its Cohiba, Montecristo and Romeo y Julieta brands. Cohiba remained the most popular brand in cigars excluding cigarillos with a retail volume share of 33%. Romeo y Julieta and Montecristo ranked third and fourth respectively in cigars excluding cigarillos, with both recording modest volume share gains as compared to 2013. Montecristo was also the best-selling brand in cigarillos, where it held a retail volume share of 18%.

PROSPECTS

  • After having grown at a CAGR of 2% during the review period, retail volume sales of cigars are expected to decline at a CAGR of 1% over 2014-2019. This is because cigars is a niche category in Singapore, one sustained mainly by tourists and professionals with higher disposable incomes. With average prices continually increasing, other less affluent consumer segments will be more hesitant to try cigars over the forecast period.
