About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • 2013 saw 3% volume and 13% current value growth through the off-trade channel. This gap between volume and value indicates consumer movement to premium products with higher unit prices, such as 100% Colombian coffee Matiz from Colcafé (launched in 2012), the Juan Valdez Origins line from Procafecol (launched in 2012) and other smaller brands. Despite being a coffee-producing country, Colombia was a market supplied traditionally with low-quality products, while high-quality products used to be exported. In the review period, local producers have given increasing importance to the local market, and the penetration of specialist coffee shops (with Juan Valdez as leader) created a culture for high-quality coffee, which is more appreciated by consumers who are disposed to pay for a higher-quality product. Juan Valdez shops were key in consumers’ cultural change, as well as the “Toma Café” (“drink coffee”) promotional programme by Federación Nacional de Caféteros (FEDECAFÉ, National Coffee Producers’ Association).

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Industria Colombiana de Café SA (Colcafé) remained the leading player with a share of 51% of current value retail sales in 2013. The company is the clear leader with well-positioned brands such as Café Sello Rojo, Colcafé and Café La Bastilla. This company is a strategic business unit of Grupo Nutresa SA, one of the big players in the Colombian food market. As well as its strong brands, the company has a well-organised distribution network, which gives it an important advantage over its competitors.

PROSPECTS

  • During the forecast period coffee will record a 3% CAGR in volume terms and a 5% CAGR in constant value terms. The latter will be a significant lower rate than in the review period (10% constant value CAGR) due to an increase in supply, which will increase the amount of coffee available in the marketplace and therefore lower unit prices. Over the forecast period, the Colombian government and Fedecafé have an ambitious goal of increasing local production. Despite the fact that most of the production will be exported, some will remain in the local market, and, together with continued growth of imports, will increase the supply available, resulting in slow price movements. In addition, Colombian consumer shifts to products with higher unit prices will be more moderate than in the review period due to dynamic growth seen in the review period. Nevertheless, increases in disposable income and a stable economic environment will ensure that coffee sales will grow over the forecast period.
