About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Coffee drinking has a very strong tradition in Croatia, with a total consumption of 2.6kg of coffee per capita in 2012. With such a high consumption, it is difficult to see the potential for further sales growth. Croatia is traditionally a café society and consumers do not have to be persuaded to have another cup of coffee in pleasant company. On the other hand, Croats are traditional and stick to their usual formats of small cups of espresso or Turkish coffee.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Local player Franck maintained its leadership in 2012 in coffee, with a retail value share of 29%, and in fresh coffee, with 55%. The company’s leadership is built not only on its reasonable pricing, but also stems from its longstanding presence in Croatia and the strong reputation for quality enjoyed by its eponymous brand. Franck also offers the Gloria brand, which became part of its coffee portfolio with the acquisition of Tombia in 2009. The company is also trying to improve its position in instant coffee, in which it ranked third with a volume share of 5% in 2012. Nestlé was in second place in coffee in 2012, claiming a retail value share of 26%. The company ranked first in instant coffee, thanks to its world-famous Nescafé brand, which is particularly popular among younger professionals in Croatia, but is not present in fresh coffee.

PROSPECTS

  • Sales of coffee are expected to continue to recover gradually over the forecast period, with total volume sales likely to grow by a CAGR of 2%, both in fresh and instant coffee. Economic improvements will be the main driving force behind growth in total volume sales, although marketing activities and new launches should also help bolster demand. In particular, it is likely that instant coffee players will seek to capitalise on more favourable economic conditions by launching new flavour variants and 4-in-1 or 5-in-1 speciality products.
