  • Nestlé continued to lead coffee in Greece in 2012 with shares of 44% in retail volume and 54% in value terms. Having secured leadership in the retail channel the company is currently focused on foodservice channels, aiming to boost the share of Buondi, its espresso brand.

PROSPECTS

  • The Greek economy is not expected to recover in the short term and all manufacturers project a gloomy future for hot drinks over the forecast period. Despite the strong coffee culture, it is expected that coffee sales will continue to decline over the forecast period, driven by a negative performance in the on-trade channel. In total volume terms, sales are expected to witness a negative CAGR of 1% over the 2012-2017 period. However, the retail channel is forecast to achieve positive growth, albeit weaker than the review period CAGR. The strong coffee culture in Greece will prevent retail sales from declining, while consumers will reduce their visits to cafés.
