TRENDS

  • Given the strong coffee drinking culture in Greece total volume sales remained largely unaffected by the latest socioeconomic developments. Nevertheless, a shift from on-trade to off-trade consumption was seen as Greek consumers tried to keep out-of-home entertainment to a minimum in order to reduce their spending. Specialist coffee shops such as the prominent Mikel Coffee and Coffee Island, which are capitalising on the trend for take-away coffee, were rather resilient to the decline in on-trade sales due to their low menu prices.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • The most important development in the competitive landscape was the merger of D.E Master Blenders 1753 with the coffee division of Mondelez International. Jacobs Douwe Egberts Hellas SA was established in July 2015 and will be managing the coffee portfolios of both companies.

PROSPECTS

  • Espresso is set to be the best performing coffee type in Greece, steadily gaining share in coffee. Fresh ground coffee pods is also set to perform relatively well, in the context of aggressive promotional activities by pods manufacturers which resulted in steep declines in the unit price of coffee pods machines during the review period and therefore to an increase in the penetration of these machines in Greek households.
