Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Espresso was a key driver of growth for coffee in both the off-trade and on-trade channels in 2014. In both channels espresso outperformed instant coffee and filter coffee. Its performance was also dynamic in the on-trade channel where ever more Greeks seem willing to abandon their former favourite frappe (iced coffee beverage prepared with instant coffee) in favour of an espresso freddo (iced espresso). In this context, the decline in volume sales of instant coffee in the on-trade in 2014 was steeper than the year before, with espresso having surpassed instant coffee in terms of category share in the foodservice channel. Espresso claimed a share of 17% within coffee.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Nestlé Hellas SA dominated coffee with a 53% value share of in Greece in 2014. It was the leader in Turkish-style coffee with its Papagalos Loumidis brand and in instant coffee with its Nescafé brand. The company’s value share declined in 2014 in line with the increase in the share of espresso within coffee, given that the company’s presence within espresso is not as strong in comparison to its rivals. Mondelez Hellas SA ranked second in coffee in 2014 with a 14% value share.

PROSPECTS

  • Espresso is set to remain the most dynamic type of coffee in Greece over the forecast period, taking share both from filter coffee and instant coffee. The migration will continue to be stronger within the on-trade yet it is also set to accelerate within the off-trade as the penetration of espresso machines in Greek households is growing. On a different note, the impressive volume growth in sales of fresh ground coffee pods will slow down considerably over the forecast period, not least because sales of machines operating with pods have started to decline already.
