TRENDS

  • In 2015, coffee continued to grow in both current value and retail volume terms, as it continued to be driven by the ongoing success of fresh ground coffee pods. This category is characterised in Portugal not only by the presence of big international players such as Nespresso, but also by strong local brands such as Delta Q and even the private label brand Pingo Doce, which have also developed their own exclusive pods systems. These brands were the motor behind the good performance of the category over the review period. Nevertheless, growth slowed down in 2015 as most Portuguese consumers have already switched from standard fresh ground coffee to fresh ground coffee pods.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Nestlé Portugal remained the leading player in coffee with a 37% value share in 2015. The company’s success still relies on its two strong brands in fresh ground coffee pods, Nescafé Dolce Gusto and Nespresso. For both brands, the company continued to launch new coffee machines and new references to catch the attention of consumers. Under its Nescafé Dolce Gusto brand, in November 2014, the company launched Ristretto Ardenza, which became its most intense coffee. As seen over the review period, new Nespresso product developments were focused on limited editions. For Christmas 2014 Nestlé launched three different Nespresso flavours inspired by desserts: Hazelnut Dessert, Chocolate Mint and Apple Crumble. In September 2015 it introduced two editions in tribute to Italy: Milano and Palermo. However, in 2015 it also reformulated its permanent Nespresso reference Cosi, which became more intense but with more touches of fruit. Finally the company invested in new points of sale, with the opening of new exclusive permanent stores, new corners and even pop-up stores.

PROSPECTS

  • Coffee is expected to increase at CAGRs of 2% in constant 2015 value terms and 1% in retail volume terms over the forecast period. The category will likely continue to be driven by premiumisation and the shift towards fresh ground coffee pods. Nevertheless, this growth is expected to be much slower than that which was registered over the review period. Because Portuguese consumers are fond of expresso style coffee, and thanks to the entry of strong local players and private label into the category, the shift to fresh ground coffee pods was rapid and substantial over the review period. Therefore, although there is still room for further growth in fresh ground coffee pods, it is slowing every year.
