TRENDS

  • Coffee witnessed surging sales of fresh ground coffee pods in 2014; these command the highest unit price in coffee. The increasing retail volume sales of fresh ground coffee pods were, however, partly offset by the declining sales of standard fresh ground coffee and fresh coffee beans.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Nestlé Portugal recorded a 38% share of sales of coffee in value terms in 2014, remaining the leading player. In volume terms it continued to lead all the coffee categories in which it was present, including fresh ground coffee pods with its brands Nespresso and Nescafé Dolce Gusto. It also led instant coffee thanks to the positive performance of its Nescafé brand.

PROSPECTS

  • The rising demand for more convenient and high-quality solutions will continue to dominate trends in coffee over the forecast period. Whilst standard fresh ground coffee will continue to account for the bulk of everyday consumption, sales will increasingly rely on promotions and discounts to ensure high volume sales.
