TRENDS

  • Trends visible in 2011 continued to develop in 2012. The growing consumer demand for fresh ground coffee pods, though, could be named the most evident trend on the Russian coffee market in 2012. The trend which emerged already in 2011 accelerated in 2012. Albeit growing from a low base, fresh ground coffee pods registered a 25% off-trade volume sales growth, rising to reach 161 tonnes, and off-trade value sales rose by 24% to reach RUB404 million. Fresh ground coffee pods is perceived as a trendy alternative to instant coffee as the time needed to prepare one drink is nearly the same for both, yet the quality of fresh ground coffee pods is much higher.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Coffee sales remain largely concentrated amongst five key players. These companies accounted for a combined retail volume share of 65% in 2012. Nestlé Russia OOO continued to lead sales in 2012, with a retail volume share of 24%, and was followed by Kraft Foods Russia OOO (14%) and Orimi Trade OOO (14%). Tchibo Frisch-Röst-Kaffee GmbH (7%) and Strauss OOO (6%) were ranked fourth and fifth in volume terms. However, in value terms, Tchibo Frisch-Röst-Kaffee GmbH accounted for an 8% share (ranked third) and Orimi Trade OOO accounted for 7% in 2012 (ranked fourth).

PROSPECTS

  • Coffee consumption in Russia is set to continue growing at a steady pace over the forecast period. Both on-trade and off-trade consumption will be benefiting from the developing coffee-drinking culture in the country. Trends visible at the end of the review period are likely to develop further during the forecast period. Coffee has a projected forecast period total volume CAGR of 4%, to reach consumption of 149,000 tonnes in 2017.
