  • Coffee increased by 2% in volume terms in 2014, totalling 124,000 tonnes. The major driver of the category is an increasing interest in fresh coffee. Despite the fact that most Russians still prefer instant coffee, fresh coffee performed very positively in volume terms in 2014, increasing by 6%, while instant coffee declined by 1%. As a result, the volume sales percentages of the two categories were 41% and 59%, respectively. Changes in consumer preferences are being determined by the increasing promotional activities by category players and the widespread belief concerning the naturalness of fresh coffee. Consumers in Russia have become more and more critical concerning the quality and the taste of coffee. The active development of coffee shops and the increasing take-away coffee culture is positively contributing to the category’s development and to fresh coffee growth in particular.

  • Nestlé Russia OOO led coffee with a 23% value share in 2014. The company’s leading position is a result of its dominance in instant coffee, where Nestlé Russia OOO held a 30% value share in 2014. It entered the category in the primary stage of its development; therefore the company was one of the driving factors for the overall category, as it promoted not only its brands but also the whole of instant coffee. Therefore, its historically well-known brands, active promotional campaigns and strong distribution positively impact the company’s performance in Russia.

PROSPECTS

  • Coffee is expected to record a marginal volume CAGR of 1% in the forecast period, and reach sales of 130,000 tonnes in 2019. The main driver of the category will remain fresh coffee during the forecast period. Take-away coffee and the Western European coffee consumption culture will remain significant factors. According to the Russia Coffee and Tea association, there are no significant factors for the vital increase or decrease on the market, as consumption habits are very stable as well as no population changes is predicted.
