  • In 2015, coffee in Russia was affected by stagnation, which resulted in a slight decline from the stable growth rates seen by the category during the previous years of the review period. Despite the country facing economic instability and deteriorating financial conditions, coffee, as one of the most stable goods in Russia, managed to preserve a positive dynamic, generating retail volume sales growth of 1% to reach 111,224 tonnes in 2015. Meanwhile, a significant increase in average unit price, mainly driven by inflation, resulted in the category seeing dynamic current value sales growth of 22% through off-trade. Russia remains one of the major instant coffee-drinking countries, accounting for a retail volume sales share of 62% in 2015 in comparison to the 38% share held by fresh coffee.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Nestlé Russia OOO remains the undisputed leader of coffee in Russia, holding retail volume and value sales shares of 22% and 21%, respectively, in 2015. The widespread popularity of its main brand Nescafé remained largely unaffected by substantial price increases and diminished consumer purchasing power. The company’s continued successful performance in 2015 was a result of supporting its products with various advertising campaigns and introducing new product innovations that were notable for offering high value-for-money. Among the immediate rivals of the Nescafé brand are Kraft Foods Russia OOO’s Carte Noire and Jacobs brands. Due to the company’s well-established distribution system and strong consumer awareness, Jacobs remains popular in instant coffee, where it ranked third in 2015, while Carte Noir enjoys strong positions in the higher-priced segment in both fresh and instant coffee, ranking third and second therein in 2015.

  • Total volume sales of coffee in Russia are expected to grow at a CAGR of 2% over the forecast period, to reach 137,641 tonnes in 2020. Due to the ongoing crisis in Russia, it is expected that the category will seeing a slight slowing of growth compared to the review period.
