  • The United Arab Emirates, and Dubai in particular, saw huge growth in tourism in 2013 as well as the previous two years. Visitors from the Middle East, Europe and Asia Pacific came to the country, attracted by its luxurious ambience and renowned hospitality. Moreover, the Arab Spring and political instability in neighbouring countries such as Egypt, Libya, Syria and Tunisia gave the market a significant boost. Growth in on-trade coffee sales was double that in the off-trade, boosted by strong tourist numbers and a growing network of coffee shops in the country. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates recorded strong GDP growth and a low unemployment rate, with all of these elements added together contributing to healthy category growth.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Nestlé SA continued to lead coffee in terms of retail value share in 2013, followed by the German company Tchibo GmbH and Maatouk Maison Du Café, which although ranking third in value terms ranked first in volume terms. The latter is a Lebanese company which owes its success to its regional popularity and reasonable pricing as well as its wide product range. Tchibo has a very strong presence in the instant coffee category in which it ranked second in both volume and value terms.

PROSPECTS

  • The inflow of tourists to the United Arab Emirates is likely to continue to increase over the next five years, positively influencing the coffee category, which is anticipated healthy volume growth. On-trade volume growth is likely to continue to be stronger than off-trade growth over the forecast period as consumption in coffee shops, bars and restaurants is likely to increase due to the improved economic climate and rising number of tourists.
