About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Speciality business model cafés are increasingly regarded as “go to” destinations as opposed to traditional franchised cafés. Coffee is increasingly consumed for the experience and appreciation of the beverage, with consumers becoming more aware of the origin, altitude of growth and roasting techniques used. High-quality coffee takes into account origin, farm, flavour and the process of roasting. Fresh bean single-origin coffee beans are brewed to maintain their flavour and several coffee shops are insistent on making the experience more than just a caffeine fix.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Nestlé continued to lead coffee in 2015 with a retail volume share of 26% in the United Arab Emirates. The company introduced new products into the market, such as Caramel Latte Macchiato fresh ground coffee pods amongst others, and revamped the look of its product lines. It introduced a much more tapered neck to its instant coffee range, which was well received by consumers.

PROSPECTS

  • The category is set to enjoy further growth in on-trade volume sales due to the activities planned by several brands for the forecast period, including the local Coffee Planet, Australian Coffee Club, Illy, and chained outlets, such as Nero, Costa and Starbucks. Coffee Planet is a local brand which increased its production capabilities by expanding its roasting facility, which is the largest in the country with further plans to expand in 2016. Coffee Planet also produces single-serve Nespresso-compatible capsules and supplies wholesale to the Emirates and Etihad airlines. Australia’s Coffee Club plans to launch 45 outlets over the forecast period and is looking to expand into the GCC.
