  • During 2013 the market recovered from the shrinkage registered in 2012 because the main city of the country, Lima, which concentrates a large share of consumption of the country, registered an unexpected weather change. During 2012 the weather in Lima was warmer, and the summer and spring extended across the year, almost annulling the winter. According to a market specialist, there is positive correlation between cold weather and chocolate consumption, and because of the warmer weather in 2012, the consumption of chocolate decreased compared to the previous year. In 2013 the weather of Lima normalised, allowing consumers’ demand for chocolate confectionery to recover. The expansion of the economy is also promoting the growth of the category in 2013, allowing consumers to have more disposable income to indulge themselves with chocolate.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Nestlé Perú SA continues to be the leader in this category with 37% of total value sales expected in 2013. The company has important brands in its portfolio, and owns the leading chocolate confectionery brand Sublime. During the latest years the company has been very aggressive in promoting its products and additionally in expanding its brand awareness to other categories with different line extensions. This strategy has proven to work, because the brand awareness of its brands has increased considerably across the different line extensions.

  • CAGRs of 3% in total volume and retail value sales are expected for the period 2013 to 2018. The competition in this category is strong because chocolate confectionery competes with all other products directed to the impulse market. In 2012 the trend showed a decline in most product categories, favouring the growth of healthier products such as sugar free gum. There can be expected in the near future the continuation of the current trend, where consumers will look for healthier products even in the impulse market; hence the growth expected over the forecast period is very moderate.
