The dog population, which rose each year of the review period, is expected to rise by a further 2% in 2016, with 3% of households owning a dog. Moreover, the popularity of dog ownership among expats is also leading to a cultural shift in the country, alongside increasing Westernisation.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Nestlé Purina is expected to remain the leading player in dog food in 2016, holding a steady 53% value share. The company’s strong lead over second-ranked Royal Canin extended further in 2015 as Nestlé’s share increased by over four percentage points, thanks to the popularity of its Purina Dog Chow and Purina Puppy Chow, each of which made strong gains in value share through their availability in a number of channels. Royal Canin has a good reputation in Egypt and is famous for producing brands that are suitable for dogs in different age segments, such as Royal Canin Giant Junior and Royal Canin Giant Puppy.

PROSPECTS

  • The variety of brands available within dog food is increasing, with retailers of these products, especially pet shops, expanding in Egypt’s major cities. Although prices are expected to increase in 2016 and 2017 due to rising tariffs, pet shops will continue expanding their outlet networks into different areas.
