About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Rice increased by 5% in current value terms in 2014 to reach C$302 million. The average unit price of rice remained stable in constant terms, mostly due to the stable prices of rice grains. The activity of private label products is also keeping prices in check as they offer competitive prices. Non-ethnic Canadian shoppers are a main driver of retail sales in Canada as the Asian culinary influence like Indian, Chinese and Japanese cuisine has created more market opportunities while sustaining good retail volume growth. Another key trend affecting the rice category in Canada is the demand for organic rice. Rice, being a staple product with a very high household penetration, is affected by the growing demand for organic products. Health-conscious consumers, who are the primary market for organic rice, are appreciating both the health aspect of rice and the convenience of new products being offered by manufactures. The new Whole Grain Rice Entrées introduced in 2013 by Lundberg Farm, a Canadian manufacturer, has met consumers’ preferences as these entrées include exciting new flavours, an improved nutritional content, organic purity, and easy-to-prepare convenience. Some of these products are: Organic Original Whole Grain Lentils & Rice, a product with a savoury blend of garlic, onion, and spices paired with brown rice and lentils; and Organic Whole Grain Spanish Rice, which is a zesty blend of flavours combined with brown rice, tomato, onion, garlic, and bell peppers. In total, six new products have been introduced, all of which are available in supermarkets and natural food stores throughout Canada in 6-ounce packages with a suggested retail price of C$4.10.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Ebro Foods SA is the leader in dried food with a 19% value share in 2014. During the fourth quarter of 2013, Maple Leaf Foods Inc sold the Olivieri fresh pasta business to Catelli Foods Corporation, which is owned by Ebro Foods. The acquisition by Ebro Foods is likely to improve the brand’s performance in Canada as it has been a clear leader with its flagship brand Catelli. Ebro Foods’ knowledge and experience in the Canadian market is likely to help it improve the performance of Olivieri. Ebro Foods has announced that the acquisition is strategic in nature as it did not previously operate in the fresh pasta category, and it is looking to improve its overall presence with both Olivieri and Catelli. The company now owns two major brands in categories that are posting growth on a yearly basis. The intention is to allow both brands to co-exist in the same distribution channel and grow through various consumer bases. The company is currently considering whether it should consolidate the two brands to potentially maximise the market potential under one brand name.

PROSPECTS

  • In general, one of the main factors aiding category growth is a demographic one. The constant influx of immigrants from Far East Asia and South Asia, is helping sales grow steadily. For this reason, dried food is expected to grow by a CAGR of 1% in both volume and value terms over the forecast period. This category is mainly driven by sales in rice, pasta and noodles, which are considered to be commodity and staple items. These products have a high household penetration, are a necessity for home cooking, and grocery retailers do not have to strategize about shelf life options or inventory rotation as they usually sell consistently during the year.
