Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Over 2013-2014 there was activity in rice related to anticipation of regulatory changes regarding the established (regulated) pricing for 80/20 rice (80% whole grain/20% broken rice) as well as the penetration of international brands (mainly from Argentina and Uruguay) and the anticipated application of free-trade agreements with the US. Even though the impact of these changes has not become evident yet, manufacturers have been negotiating with the local government and implementing strategic measures in order to deal with the changes, for example increasing production capacity, downsizing costs and modernising their distribution and marketing systems. In this context, innovation has remained limited to the introduction of ready-to-eat imported formulations and premium products (such as carbon neutral brands) with no other value added features except for added vitamins, minerals and folic acid. However, this has not been the situation in dessert mixes, in which further levels of segmentation have been achieved in terms of new recipes and flavours as well as low-calorie and gluten-free formulations.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Local company Cía Arrocera Industrial SA was the leading player in dried processed food in Costa Rica, accounting for a retail value share of 21%, in 2014. The company benefits from having created important economies of scale by producing and distributing its bestselling brand Arroz Tío Pelón at a broad national level and by offering a wide variety of products at competitive prices to appeal to local consumers. Gruma Centroamérica remained the second leading player in dried processed food in 2014, as this company has also managed to establish its Luisiana brand, in rice, among local consumers. This company has the advantage of being the leading producer of baked goods in Costa Rica, which enables it to use the broad distribution platform that it has created throughout the country. The remaining retail value share of dried processed food remained quite fragmented among other local companies, such as Arrocera de Costa Rica SA which made strong efforts to maintain its retail value share.

PROSPECTS

  • Manufacturers of rice are expected to continue to focus on different strategies for improving their rice production systems, in order to face increasing competition and to be prepared for the free-trade agreements with the U.S. These strategies are expected to include improved performance of cultivation zones (from the Pacific to the Atlantic), greater production capacity and modernising of processes and equipment among other things. Under such a competitive scenario, differentiation is expected to result with manufacturers investing in environmental and quality certification (such as carbon neutral processing for Arroz Tío Pelón by Cía Arrocera Industrial SA), while also continuing to appeal to the patriotism of local consumers (such as locally made and 100% Costa Rican). Dried ready meals also has the potential to continue penetrating dried processed food due mainly to increasing demand for convenience among local consumers.
