About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Dried processed food has performed relatively well during the post-recession years as consumers have been gaining confidence. As a result, the category has revived with new launches and innovations and Estonians have started trading up and purchasing more of these quality products. Volume sales have also been affected by world cereal commodity prices moving upwards, pressuring producers to adjust the prices of their products. Sales are largely based on rice, noodles and dried pasta products. Despite the latter three being rather saturated in volume and per capita consumption terms, the trend towards foreign cuisine invading the homes of Estonian consumers is favouring the emergence of new products within these categories which are meant to be incorporated into foreign dishes.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Amber Pasta UAB is in the lead with a 12% share of value sales. The producer is well known for its Manni pasta brand which attracts consumers with a good price-value relationship for its products. The company does not use a lot of advertising nor does it invest in new products as success in dried processed food mostly derives from loyal customers and their good experience with the products. Other noteworthy producers in highly competitive dried processed food are Raisio Nutrition with 7% of value sales and Nestle SA, which has a 6% value share.

PROSPECTS

  • Continuous improvements in the economic confidence of Estonian consumers will keep dried processed food sales healthy. Dried processed food will remain an integral part of people’s plates as the staple is considered to be among the main sources of nutrition, together with potatoes and vegetables. With the growing health and wellness trend, sales of “healthier” and high-quality products (eg brown rice, rye pasta, etc) will improve as these are considered to be richer in nutritional value compared to potatoes. Retail value growth will also be fuelled by increasing raw material prices in the world market. Threats to dried processed food will mainly come from potatoes, which are more commonly seen on Estonian menus and are also cheaper and are therefore preferred during economically difficult conditions.
