About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Dried processed food was influenced by two distinctive trends in 2014. On one hand, Portuguese consumers increasingly opted to cook at home. Due to the long-lasting economic recession and growing awareness of healthy nutrition, the Portuguese are opting to prepare their meals themselves from scratch using fresh and usually healthy ingredients. For those who work there was also an increased number of consumers preparing breakfast and lunches at home and taking them to the workplace. On the other hand, dried processed food is a quite mature category, which makes it difficult for high growth rates to be achieved. Consequently, dried processed food registered current value growth of approximately 2% in 2014 and despite the moderate rate outperformed the review period average of only 1%. Nevertheless, retail volume sales remained stagnant, amounting to 162,300 tonnes.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Sonae Modelo Continente Hipermercados SA and its Continente private label remained the leading player in dried processed food. Continente has a wide range of private label rice qualities as well as dessert mixes that are perceived by consumers as quality products with affordable prices. Additionally the company has been tapping into one of the most important trends affecting the overall packaged food market: the consumer preference for proximity in terms of retail outlet locations. As a result, it has been expanding its most recent supermarket format, O Meu Super, through a franchising system selling the dried processed food products of the Continente brand. The company has also invested in price promotions that involve its Continente fidelity card, and staple products such as rice are regularly targeted. All of these elements allowed Continente to maintain a leading position in dried processed food at the end of the review period.

PROSPECTS

  • Volume is expected to grow slightly more than value over the forecast, largely due to more intense price competition. Rice, the largest category, is expected to see retail volume and constant value sales remain relatively steady throughout the forecast period. Dessert mixes, in turn, should follow a similar trend. While both categories are predicted to benefit from regular new launches, the level of saturation in rice poses a major threat to the development of dried processed food as a whole in coming years.
