About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Dried processed food is dominated by rice and dried pasta, both of which are staples in Slovenian households. This staple positioning helped to ensure that rice and dried pasta (and by extension dried processed food as a whole) developed positively throughout the review period despite increasing maturity, unfavourable economic conditions and growing competition from other packaged food categories. Given the trend towards busier lifestyles, the fact that rice and dried pasta are considered to be among the most convenient staple foods in Slovenia also helped to sustain robust demand in both categories. At the same time, both categories benefited from rising demand for healthier product types such as wholegrain and high fibre pasta or brown and basmati rice, which tend to command higher prices. However, most of the innovation in dried processed food during the review period came from emerging categories such as instant noodles.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Dried processed food in Slovenia is highly fragmented, with several companies and brands competing in most categories. Nonetheless, domestic manufacturer Žito remained the clear leader in 2013 with an overall value share of 20%. This was mainly due to its commanding lead in rice, where its Zlato Polje brand claimed a value share of 41%. The company also maintained a strong presence in dried pasta, where it offers the Grande range. Barilla Holding was the second leading dried processed food player, claiming an overall value share of 11% thanks to its leadership in the dried pasta category. Multinational giant Mars, which markets the world famous Uncle Ben's rice brand in Slovenia, rounded out the top three with an overall value share of 10%. Other prominent competitors in dried processed food in 2013 included Mlinotest dd, Pecjak doo, Rickmers Reismühle GmbH, Dr Oetker doo and Podravka.

PROSPECTS

  • Growth in retail volume sales of dried processed food over the forecast period is expected to faster than during the review period, as is value sales growth at constant 2014 prices. This improvement will be underpinned by economic recovery in Slovenia. As the economic outlook brightens and purchasing power rises, Slovenians will not only increase their volume consumption of dried processed food, but also become more inclined to trade up to higher quality and more expensive products. New launches and marketing activities will further bolster the performance of dried processed food as a whole.
