EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Growth Slows Due to Economic Downturn

Despite the global recession and its impact on Hungarian consumer confidence, value sales of eyewear increased in 2009, albeit at a slower rate than previous years. Adding to Hungarian consumers’ woes were high levels of consumer credit and increasing mortgage debt, both of which made many consumers uneasy. Overall, in Hungary real earnings decreased moderately while consumption declined significantly. Investments in the business sector dropped because of limited demand and scarcity of resources. In the second half of the year, inflation accelerated as a result of the increase in VAT and excise duties as well as the weakness of the forint. These trends all had a direct impact on value sales of eyewear as many consumers bought low-priced eyewear or postponed their purchases altogether, waiting for the economic picture to brighten.

Growing Demand for Contact Lenses

Demand for contact lenses increased significantly over the review period. In part, the growth was due to consumers’ increasingly seeking convenience, which the new contact lenses provide as they allow users to the products comfortably for various periods. As well, due to intensified competition among manufacturers, the price of contact lenses has fallen significantly, making them more affordable to a wider range of consumers. Contact lenses are becoming popular not only amongst younger consumers but amongst older consumers, as well.

International Players Dominate Hungarian Eyewear

The Hungarian eyewear market is dominated by international companies like CIBA VISION, Bausch & Lomb and Johnson & Johnson Vision Care. Their products are distributed mainly via the local Fotex-Ofotért, the retail leader with nearly 70 stores in Hungary, and Vision Express Opticians. Independent eyewear specialists also play an important role in the eyewear distribution. No market player appears to be in a safe position and it is expected that eyewear manufacturers will have to continue to invest heavily in product innovation in order to maintain their market positions. International players have the budgets to do this and, thus, it is expected that they will continue to have the advantage over domestic players.

Convenience Driving Demand

As the effects of the global recession dissipate and as consumers’ disposable incomes rise over the forecast period, consumers are expected to make convenience one of the key factors in eyewear purchasing decisions. Many will purchase such products as daily disposable lenses, two-weekly/monthly and multifocal contact lenses. Manufacturers and retailers are likely to drive volume sales through fierce price competition.

Contact Lenses in Hungary - Category Analysis

  • During the review period, value sales of contact lenses in Hungary grew at a CAGR of nearly 9%, driven by the growing number of brands available in the market, technological advances and declining retail prices. Consumers, in particular younger consumers, appreciated the convenience of contact lenses. Values sales of daily disposables, for example, increased at a CAGR of 15.6%. Regardless, more than 43% of the contact lenses sold in Hungary are two-weekly/monthly disposables, followed by extended wear contact lenses which account for just over 40% of the total.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Throughout the review period, the leader in the Hungarian contact lens market was Bausch & Lomb. In 2009, the company recorded a share of 34%, down from a recent high of 52% in 2002. Its leadership position has been under attack by a range of multinational brands, including Novartis (CIBA VISION), CooperVision and Johnson & Johnson Vision Care. Bausch & Lomb was the first contact lens brand in Hungary and many consumers have remained loyal to the brand.

PROSPECTS

  • Over the forecast period, value sales of contact lenses are projected to grow at a CAGR of more than 7%, reaching nearly HUF 5.8 billion in 2014. In 2014, sales of daily disposables will account for 24% of total sector sales, compared to 16% in 2009. With 39.6% of total sales, two-weekly/monthly disposables will still account for the largest share of the market in 2014.

Spectacles in Hungary - Category Analysis

  • It is estimated that more than one-half of the Hungarian population needs some kind of vision correction, and spectacles, the traditional vision correction tool, dominate the eyewear market. Spectacles are easy to wear and do not require the care of contact lenses. Therefore, older consumers typically prefer spectacles. Further, prices for spectacles are very affordable.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • In 2009, Zyloware was the leader in the Hungarian spectacles market with a share of 9.3%, down from 9.7% in 2008. The company has maintained its leadership position due to its Sophia Loren spectacles frames, a well-known brand with a very good reputation in Hungary. Its position has been under attack by other multinational brands like Hoya Lens Hungary and Eyewear Designs, although both also lost share over the review period.

PROSPECTS

  • Over the forecast period, value sales of spectacles are projected to increase at a CAGR of nearly 6%, reaching HUF 45.8 billion in 2014. Spectacle frames are projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.6% while spectacle lenses are expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.4%.
