Mixed retailing in Slovenia remains a highly concentrated landscape, and the format represents only a limited share of overall retailing. Furthermore, the bulk of retail value sales is derived from two department stores, Maximarket and Nama, which are both located in the city centre of the capital city of Ljubljana, within close proximity of one another.
In 2021, variety stores concentrated on offering generous discounts, as variety stores are often used as a channel to liquidate stock and there was an oversupply of stock in 2021, due to stores closures in 2020. With such generous discounting, the channel attracted the usual lower-income consumers, as well as higher income consumers who sought lucrative bargains.
Mixed retailers will register moderate constant value growth over the forecast period. Department stores will register higher growth than variety stores.
Globally, department stores are facing an uncertain future over the long term. Increasingly consumers view the department store as outdated and there is increasing competition from shopping malls.
There are no mass merchandisers or warehouse clubs. One reason for the absence of such retailers is that Slovenia has a small population.
