The channel often offers jumbo and bundle packs which are attractive for consumers willing to pay a higher level per purchase but save on the average price per unit. Nevertheless, lower-income consumers can seldom afford the expense that a whole nappy/diaper package implies. These consumers can afford daily small purchases with independent small grocers being their main retail channel, thanks to special product offers targeting this particular demographic. For example, grocery manufacturers have designed one portion presentations for this channel, and pet food is sold in bulk, allowing families to take home only the amount of food that they can afford in one purchase. Nappies/diapers/pants is not the exception, and a common practice in Mexico among low-income demographics is to buy these products one unit at a time. The small grocery owner buys a jumbo pack but sells the diapers/nappies/pants per individual unit, enabling families to buy only a couple each day.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Kimberly-Clark led nappies/diapers/pants in 2013 with a 70% value share. The company owns the Huggies and Kleen Bebé brands, with the former having a more premium target audience, but both enjoying strong positioning. Kimberly-Clark employs constant mass media advertising and frequent product innovation to maintain its leadership. In second spot Productos Internacionales Mabe followed with a 9% value share thanks to its Chicolastic and BioBaby brands.
