About this Report

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

NATPACK boosts its rigid plastic pack sales by encouraging affordable personal care products

Egypt-based National Co for Packaging Industries (NATPACK) is a leading plastics packaging producer/supplier for the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, household, food and beverage markets. At the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010, NATPACK announced a business program, “Your health is your choice”, aiming to encourage personal care products producers to increase their production of personal care goods in NATPACK rigid plastic packs that are mainly designed to offer high protection from swine flu. NATPACK’s main message through this campaign is that the risk of catching or spreading this virus can be reduced by maintaining good hygiene basics using disinfectants, hand-cleansing gels and creams, etc. NATPACK ran a promotional offer offering its clients 10% discounts on many of its packaging products and tubes with standard diameters, to all clients so they can make these products affordable for end users and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). These products are ideal for dispensing and spraying all sorts of gels, creams and liquids offering hygienic protection for skin, body and surrounding surfaces. NATPACK ensures a reliable pack for a reliable shelf product.

Squeezable plastic tubes march on plastic bottles and jars in beauty and personal care

Due to the shift towards using squeezable plastic tubes for personal care products, especially for skin care products, by the main players headed by Unilever, Avon and Johnson & Johnson, rigid plastic producers led by NATPACK and the Egyptian German Company for plastics (EGC) have announced several launches of new product developments in that format.

NATPACK continued its promotional series in 2010 by offering clients a new break on Diameters 19mm and 25mm plastic tubes. These small, rounded, squeezable tubes are mainly suitable for use in personal care products such as complimentary gels, shampoos, conditioners, tooth paste, creams, etc.

Price inflation of food products in 2010 leads to offering smaller pack sizes

During 2010, prices of consumer food products increased by 3% due to increased transportation costs as well as an increase the cost of food raw materials, especially beans. Canned/preserved food producers quickly responded by announcing their intention to reduce pack sizes to keep price ranges fixed and push consumption.

Harvest Co, as one of the biggest canned/preserved food producers, reduced all the packaged food in its metal food cans from 400g to be 380g, offered at the same prices, and established a specialised company, Harvest Trade & Distribution, to provide a wider product range to the Egyptian market through good outreach to all Egyptian supermarkets and key accounts. This step by Harvest made canned/preserved beans and vegetables available along the whole region in all retail channels; it pushed consumption of canned beans to replace that of fresh beans, which saw a dramatic increase in prices by 55% in 2010.

Flexible plastic gains on folding cartons in frozen foods

Another result of the increased price of food is that flexible packaging has seen significant growth as producers of frozen processed vegetables such as the Faragalla group and Farm Frites have switched from folding carton packaging to flexible plastic. Producers of processed meat also shifted from the folding carton to flexible plastic packaging, led by Three Chefs Company.

Closures - Egypt - Category Analysis

HEADLINES

TRENDS

  • Increasing consumption of canned/preserved food, especially canned beans and canned fish, leads to increasing retail unit sales of easy-open can ends. This trend is a result of the enhanced income levels of consumers and the change in their behaviour to make their lives easier, right down to replacing standard can end closures.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Alexandria Company for Industrial Packages (ACIP) is the largest producer of closures in Egypt, especially plastic screw closures for PET and HDPE bottles. It has the largest factory in Egypt, located in Alexandria, from which it produces around 1.7 billion plastic screw closures yearly.
  • Table 17 Ranking of Major Closure Companies 2009

PROSPECTS

  • Standard can ends are expected to see a rapid decline during the forecast period, in spite of retail sales of canned/preserved food being expected to continue to grow rapidly over the forecast period. Producers are expected to shift to easy-open can ends to be aligned with consumer demand for things that make their busy lives easier.

Flexible Packaging - Egypt - Category Analysis

HEADLINES

TRENDS

  • The shift of consumers from fresh vegetables, meat and fish to frozen alternatives due to improved income levels encompassing more consumer appliances such as freezers, has led to increasing retail sales of flexible packaging as a major packaging format for frozen and processed products at affordable prices.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Kobusch-Sengewald is an international producer and processor of plastic packaging films for food, techno-chemical and hygiene products, as well as for medical packaging. It is present in Egypt under the subsidiary Kobusch Packaging Egypt Ltd, with products designed for the packaging of fresh and dried processed food as well as dog and cat food. The packager is a main supplier of Procter & Gamble Egypt SAE.
  • Table 26 Ranking of Major Flexible Packaging Companies 2009

PROSPECTS

  • With more mothers returning to work shortly after having babies, demand for baby food and powdered milk is expected to rise over the forecast period. As a result, the retail unit sales of powdered milk and baby food in flexible packaging are expected to grow rapidly. This is driven by the fact that women prefer to buy refills in flexible packaging to decant into the original metal tin they already have.

Glass Packaging - Egypt - Category Analysis

HEADLINES

TRENDS

  • Increasing consumer awareness of hygienic packaging led to higher demand for glass containers, especially for dairy products and baby food. As a result, several major processed soft cheese brands, including Président and Teama Milk have shifted to glass jars to allay consumer concerns about highly processed foods.

RETURNABLES

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Misr Glass Manufacturing Co is the largest glass packaging producer in Egypt. In 2007, Misr Glass became a joint stock company owned by both El-Zayat Group (65%) and Citadel Capital Group’s subsidiary Mina Glass Ltd (35%). In 2008, Misr Glass’ shareholder Citadel Group started a 5-year investment program of US$50 million, which aims to increase the production capacity of the glass packager to its target 315,000 tonnes, and to support its plans to reach markets in the Middle Eastern and Gulf regions.
  • Table 35 Ranking of Major Glass Packaging Companies 2009

PROSPECTS

  • The glass packaging producers are revising their production capacities due to the increasing gap between demand and supply. Misr Glass Manufacturing Co and Kama Glass are leading this trend. As a result, the prices of glass packaging will be cheaper and available to food producers. This will entice food producers to shift to glass packaging to reduce costs and to offer high quality packaging materials for consumers.

Liquid Cartons - Egypt - Category Analysis

HEADLINES

TRENDS

  • After acquiring Beyti UHT milk in June 2009, Al Marai Co started to reduce production of the Beyti brand of UHT milk in HDPE bottles in 2010 and to introduce the Al Marai brand in 1L brick liquid cartons. As a result, the supply of brick liquid carton packaging for long life/UHT milk increased at the expense of HDPE bottles.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • There is no local producer of liquid cartons in Egypt. The main player for local consumption is Tetra Pak Egypt which had the monopoly on supply until 2007, then saw its share contract with the arrival of SIG Combibloc Obeikan in the country, to account for 90% of filled volume in 2010.Tetra Pak provides 1L, 1.5L, 500ml and 250ml brick liquid cartons for UHT milk and fruit/vegetable juice, as well as gable top liquid cartons and other shape liquid cartons. Tetra Pak is a main supplier of Juhayna milk by Juhayna Dairy Corp and other large producers of milk and juices
  • Table 44 Ranking of Major Liquid Carton Companies 2009

PROSPECTS

  • As a result of the support from the food industry for liquid carton packaging, many of the new entrants in long-life/UHT milk are expected to use liquid cartons for UHT milk packaging. It is also expected that Al Marai will switch its Beyti brand in HDPE bottles to brick liquid carton packaging, under the Al Marai Co brand name.

Metal Packaging - Egypt - Category Analysis

HEADLINES

TRENDS

  • Metal beverage can packaging led the growth of metal packaging during the review period due to increasing demand for and retail sales of carbonates and non-alcoholic beer in such packaging. Metal beverage cans are a favourite of youth; particularly for energy drinks led by the Red Bull brand in 2010.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • In January 2006, Rexam Beverage Can Europe acquired the local metal can producer Ecanco (Egyptian Can Making Company); Ecanco was acquired for US$107 million. Rexam Beverage Can Egypt leads the metal can market with a 78% share and is the sole producer of metal cans for carbonates in Egypt. Its actual production reached 600 million units in 2009 with an average year-on-year growth of 23%.
  • Table 53 Ranking of Major Metal Packaging Companies 2009

PROSPECTS

  • While consumers are expected to shift from consuming carbonates to other non-alcoholic drinks; retail sales of metal beverage cans are expected to continue to grow due to the fact that the expected shift will be mainly towards non-alcoholic beer and energy drinks; especially since energy drinks prices are expected to be cheaper due to increasing competition.

Paper-based Containers - Egypt - Category Analysis

HEADLINES

TRENDS

  • Increasing consumer demand for and consumption of ice cream products, especially during summer season, is due to longer summers and the changing population structure. This in turn leads to increasing retail sales of board tubes that are mainly used by manufacturers to package ice cream.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Al Jawhara Corrugated Board and Fine Printing Co (JCB), is the largest producer of paper-based containers, sheets and packages. Its factory was established in Cairo, Egypt, on an 80,000 sq m site, to represent the largest corrugated board and fine printing production facility in the region. It is also counted as one of the largest and pioneer factories in the field of manufacturing and supplying corrugated board and fine printing in the Gulf Area and the Middle East.
  • Table 62 Ranking of Major Paper-based Container Companies 2009

PROSPECTS

  • There is an expected growth in retail unit sales of paper-based containers during the forecast period, driven by the expected rapid growth of paper-based packaging, used by manufacturers of frozen processed food, sweet and savoury snacks, ice cream and bakery products. This is because paper-based containers are more attractive and give the consumers the feeling that the products are high quality.

To deliver fresh insights every year in countries all around the world, we believe the strongest approach is to use analysts on the ground. These are essential parts of our ability to report incisively on these markets.

        Research Methodology

        Our research methods

Each Euromonitor International industry report is based on a core set of research techniques:

        Desk research

With industry events, corporate activity, trends and new product introductions tracked year round by our industry team, desk research provides a starting point for the in-country research programme. Our in-country researchers will access the following sources:

        • National statistics offices governmental and official sources
        • National and international trade press
        • National and international trade associations
        • Industry study groups and other semi-official sources
        • Company financials and annual reports
        • Broker reports
        • Online databases
        • The financial, business and mainstream press

Accessing sources is only the first step. The ability to interpret and reconcile often conflicting information across multiple sources is a key aspect of the added value we provide.

        Store checks

Store checks are an integral part of our methods for product industries. Carried out on the ground across a relevant mix of channels, the information gained provides first-hand insights into the products we are researching, specifically:

        • Place: We track products in all relevant channels, selective and mass, store and non-store
        • Product: What are innovations in products, pack sizes and formats?
        • Price: What are brand price variations across channels, how do private label’s prices compare to those of branded goods?
        • Promotion: What are marketing and merchandising trends, offers, discounts and tie-ins?

Findings are cross-referenced with brand share data analysis. The results, combined with the findings of desk research, provide a strong basis for identifying key areas of questioning to take forward into our trade survey.

        Trade survey

Interaction with global players at corporate HQ and regional levels is complemented by unique local data and insights from our in-country trade surveys around the world. Through the high profile of the Euromonitor International brand, we are able to talk directly to a wide range of sources and therefore inform our analysis with the knowledge and opinions of the leading operators in the market.

        Trade surveys allow us to:

        • Fill gaps in available published data per company
        • Generate a consensus view of the size, structure and strategic direction of the category
        • Access year-in-progress data where published sources are out of date
        • Evaluate the experts’ views on current trends and market developments

In building our composite industry view, we engage with a variety of personnel in key players at all points of the supply chain: materials suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and service operators. We also interview desk research sources: industry associations; study groups; and third party observers from the trade and financial press.

Our objective is to engage in conversation with trade sources in which we exchange ideas and views on the industry, sharing our work-in-progress findings on supply/demand dynamics and potential. This dialogue enhances both parties’ understanding of the local market. The scope and reach of our trade survey also serves to eliminate bias (intentional and unintentional) from any single source.

        Company analysis

At a global level, our company research combines our mix of industry interaction and use of secondary sources such as annual accounts, broker reports, financial press and databases. From a data perspective, the aim is to build “top-down” estimates of major players’ total global and regional sales.

At a country level, in line with local reporting requirements, we access annual accounts, national-specific company databases and local company websites. These are all invaluable sources as we build a view of each domestic player’s size and position within very specific categories of the industry.

        Forecasts

Data projections and future performance analysis are key elements of Euromonitor International’s market intelligence. Working with historic trends of 15 years or more, a key aspect of our trade survey is to engage industry insider views of the next five years. Will volumes maintain their historic trend? Will price increases or falls of recent years continue, accelerate or slow down? Will increasing demand for one product cannibalise sales of another?

Forecasts represent many of the essential conclusions we have reached about the current state of the market, how it works and how it behaves under different macro and micro conditions. Our written analysis will state the assumptions and the trade opinion behind whether our predictions are optimistic or pessimistic, so that clients can use our statistical forecasts with confidence.

        Data validation

All data is subjected to an exhaustive review process, at country, regional and global levels.

The interpretation and review of sources and data inputs forms a central part of the collaboration between industry teams and country researchers. Numbers are delivered to regional and global offices with an audit trail of sources and calculations to allow for a thorough evaluation of data sense and integrity.

Upon completion of the country review phase, data is then reviewed on a comparative basis at regional and then at a global level. Comparative checks are carried out on per capita consumption and spending levels, growth rates, patterns of category and subcategory breakdowns and distribution of sales by channel. Top-down estimates are reviewed against bottom-up regional and global market and company sales totals.

Where marked differences are seen between proximate country markets or ones at similar developmental levels, supplementary research is conducted in the relevant countries to confirm and/or amend those findings. This process ensures international comparability across the database, that consistent category and subcategory definitions have been used and that all data has been correctly tested. We make sure that possible discrepancies between different published sources have been reconciled and that our interpretation of opinion and expectation from each country’s trade sources has been applied to form a coherent international pattern.

        Market analysis

Another integral part of all our research programmes is that all Euromonitor International data is accompanied by clear written analysis.
