About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Even though dried pasta remains virtually the only pasta type available for most local consumers, modern grocery retailers such as high-end supermarkets and hypermarkets have continued supporting the development of fresh pasta products, dedicating larger sections of their units to accommodating more pasta types and brands. Besides fresh pasta, the availability of other dried pasta specialities such as gnocchi, fusilli and farfalle also continues to attract upper-class local consumers to try these products, especially those foods that are imported from Italy and are capable of representing the taste and tradition of this cuisine style better.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Local manufacturer Roma Prince SA will continue to exert its dominance in pasta sales in Costa Rica during 2013, and account for 57% of retail value sales, benefiting from the vast availability of its products, which can be found at relatively affordable unit prices at most grocery retailers in the country. Economies of scale have allowed this manufacturer to develop efficient productive systems and distribution networks, in turn consolidating its top-of-mind brand positioning throughout many decades. In second, another local company, Distribuidora Lucema SA, will hold a 14% value share, leveraging brand awareness of its products with the development of complementary distribution networks (as it also distributes other imported and local products besides the pasta it manufactures), which allows it to reach a good number of modern and traditional grocery outlets throughout the country.

PROSPECTS

  • As a consequence of the further immersion of the local economy within the current globalisation process, it is anticipated that more imported and added-value products will continue expanding their presence within modern grocery retailers throughout the next five years, offering local consumers more options and product types to choose from. In such a context, the offer of more functional and healthier products (such as integral or even organic pasta), shall continue developing in Costa Rica, suiting better the needs of middle- and high-income consumers who continue to be interested in the adoption of more balanced lifestyles.
