About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Gluten-free pasta, organic pasta and high-fibre pasta will be the main categories that will have a positive impact on the pasta category in 2014. Eating healthily is, like in any Western country, an important part of the day for a growing number of the Danish population. Gluten-free pasta, especially, will experience rapid continued growth in Denmark in 2014. Odense University Hospital has done research in this field and has had its research findings published in media in Denmark. The findings have mainly focused on the negative consequences of eating gluten if one cannot tolerate it, and many Danes cannot eat it but are unaware of this. The exposure of these findings in the Danish media has made sales increase, and for example a company like Semper AB has entered the category on the strength of gluten-free pasta’s success. Compared with for example the UK, demand for gluten-free products is still minor and dominated by major, international companies. Consequently, until now no private label products exist in this category, but it is expected that this will change when gluten-free products become more mainstream.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • The Danish pasta category will be led by Pastella from Orkla Foods Danmark A/S in 2014, which is a premium chilled/fresh pasta brand. The company will have 21% of total value sales in 2014, and it has represented this percentage, or slightly higher, for a number of years. Its closest branded competitor, Barilla by Valora Trade Denmark A/S, will have 6% of the category in value terms in 2014. In addition to these two, pasta is full of private label products. The retailer Coop Danmark A/S in particular is strong with its Coop and X-Tra labels. Coop is mid-priced while X-Tra is economy. Both have been high in the rankings of pasta brands in Denmark for a number of years. In 2014 Coop will have a 16% share and X-Tra will have an 11% share, in value terms. The category is very stable and major changes among products will be limited.

PROSPECTS

  • During the forecast period, Euromonitor International estimates that there will be even more focus on the health and wellness categories in pasta. Danes like pasta dishes but they also like to substitute the typically white pasta with a healthier alternative like the wholegrain version. Sales will consequently go from traditional Italian-style pasta to a more-northern European type of pasta. Danes have a tradition, together with other Nordic countries, of eating darker types of grain products and this is also visible in the pasta category. In regard to chilled/fresh pasta and dried pasta, in volume terms chilled/fresh pasta will have the better volume CAGR at 1%. Also, chilled/fresh pasta is a more-expensive type in Denmark.
