About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Much of the growth seen by pasta at the start of the review period was linked to consumers trading up from unpackaged to packaged pasta due to concerns over hygiene and quality. However, in 2013 this shift is occurring for a different reason. Consumers are finding that the unpackaged pasta they were used to buying from open markets faced shortages, with this partly linked to higher international wheat prices as a result of a decline in global wheat inventories due to bad weather. Moreover, the sharp drop in Egypt’s foreign currency reserves, and struggles through a political and economic crisis, hampered the government’s imports of wheat.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Al Farasha Co was the clear leader in pasta at the end of the review period, accounting for an estimated 33% value share in 2013. This is largely attributed to the company’s Maleka brand, which offers a wide range of pack sizes and pasta shapes at low prices. The brand also benefits from its wide distribution, via modern grocery retailers such as supermarkets and hypermarkets and more traditional channels such as independent small grocers.

PROSPECTS

  • Pasta is expected to lose out to bread due to government subsidies regulations that favour bread production during the forecast period. Ongoing economic uncertainty and widespread poverty will thus support a strong 5% volume CAGR during 2013-2018. The Egyptian government currently provide a subsidy for bread by subsidising flour. Many small pasta players take advantage of the subsidised flour for pasta production so lowering their raw material costs and price, and increasing their margins. These players are usually unregulated producers who don’t even have a licensed factory. So the government will reform the subsidy system on bread as a final product rather than its main raw material.
