  • Due to the economic crisis, which has been reshuffling the Italian food market increasingly in recent years, pasta has been facing turmoil mainly in terms of value and volume, given that the product per se is mature and does not allow major product innovations in the short term. Customers have been looking for ways to save money in the past years, and pasta was the perfect match between low cost and nutritional values, thus allowing tremendous growth among private label for all retailers that invested in developing/promoting it.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Pasta in Italy is led by Barilla and De Cecco, followed by Pastificio Rana and La Molisana. During the recession, brands have been reacting differently to maintain their leading positions: Barilla has been staying loyal to the statement made in 2012 of focusing on the company’s core business, which is pasta, pasta sauces and bakery products; De Cecco has been diversifying its core pasta business by launching new products within crackers and bread substitute ranges, while Pastificio Rana focused on premium products.

PROSPECTS

  • During the forecast period, pasta in Italy is expected to remain negative both in terms of volume as well as value, driven down by the increasing presence of private label and the continuing promotional activity on major brands. As a matter of fact, although major retailers are slowing down promotion as the economy recovers, consumers are getting used to paying lower prices for basic products, and are not willing to increase their spending unless there is tangible added value, like for example, organic ingredients. This is going to affect volume sales of pasta in the future.
