TRENDS

  • Pasta was highly influenced by bulk purchases. In 2013, there was a reverse trend of migration to simple and cheap pasta, especially unpackaged. Bulk pasta sales grew nationwide because of low-priced positioning. As there was an increase in the price of packaged pasta in 2013, bulk purchases allowed people to secure lower prices. This saw the market size of packaged pasta stagnate. However, lower prices often reflect a drop in product quality.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Pambac SA, Pangram SA and Morarit Panificatie Baneasa SA are set to account for a 47% share of retail value sales in dried pasta, and pasta overall, in 2013. Nestlé Romania Srl (Buitoni) and Nordic Import Export Srl (PAF, Rana and Fini) are predicted to maintain their leading positions in chilled/fresh pasta, though it remains highly fragmented. Private label is expected to post a marginally improved 11% share of retail value sales of dried pasta in 2013, largely because of a wide variety of good quality products at affordable prices.

PROSPECTS

  • The general perception of pasta products is not expected to change radically in the short to medium term. Pasta’s growth potential is rather limited due to category saturation. Moreover, development will mainly be driven by the launch of better quality products and the performance of pasta sold in bulk. Private label is a strong presence, and will have a major impact on the performance of branded players in the forecast period.
