Consumption of pasta as a celebratory dish continues to increase steadily in the Philippines, while increasing numbers of Philippine consumers are now preparing pasta dishes as a regular meal on a more frequent basis. The availability of a wider range of pasta sauce in domestic grocery retail outlets has further increased consumer awareness of various different pasta preparations among Philippine consumers. Many middle-income and upper-income Philippine consumers have recently become more enthusiastic about new pasta flavours and varieties and this has led increasing numbers of Philippine consumers to make attempts to substitute pasta dishes with the more typical rice and meat combinations. This situation resulted in higher per capita consumption of pasta during 2012.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • RFM Corp’s pasta brand White King Fiesta strengthened its leading position in pasta during 2011 as the brand’s value share increased by five percentage points to 35%. Furthermore, White King Fiesta is expected to record a further two percentage point increase during 2012, further strengthening its lead with a value share of 37%. White King assumed leadership of pasta from long-time leader Unilever Foods Philippines (CMC) with its Royal brand in 2009 due to its lower pricing strategy, which was backed by strong advertising campaigns featuring high-profile celebrities.

  • As increasing numbers of Philippine consumers are beginning to regard pasta as more than a celebration dish, pasta faces a bright future in the Philippines during the forecast period. The category is expected to increase in volume at a CAGR of 5% over the review period, with constant value sales also set to increase at a CAGR of 5%, rising to Ps10.1 billion by the end of 2017. Aside from more frequent consumption, pasta is also expected to snatch some value sales from plain noodles during the forecast period as increasing numbers of Philippine consumers switch from plain noodles to pasta when preparing dishes for celebrations.
