Sample Analysis

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Moderate growth of pet food

The overall pet care market grew moderately in 2011 in current value terms compared with the previous year. The number of dog and cat owners feeding their pets prepared food is increasing. With busy lifestyles pet owners want to feed their pets properly and quickly to spare time to care for their pet’s physical and psychological well-being. The range of pet food and pet care products on offer is becoming wider and more sophisticated. However, unlike in developed European countries, the percentage share of prepared food relative to the cat and dog population is low. Consequently, the potential for volume and value growth is promising.

Cats less common than dogs but becoming more popular

Dog food accounted for the majority of value sales in 2011. The number of dogs in Slovakia is almost four times larger than the number of cats. Cats are popular with retired single people (mostly women) and 2-person households without children. Those in the latter group have busy lifestyles and tend to work late, and consequently do not have time to walk a dog regularly.

Multinationals dominate but domestic brands gain attention

Dog and cat food remained relatively consolidated in 2011, with the top four producers accounting for just over half of total value sales. The leading multinationals – Mars SK and Nestlé Slovensko sro – enjoyed a significant share of sales thanks to early entry, wide product portfolios and strong advertising. Successful domestic companies include Ani-pet spol sro and Akvarium Kobolka sro. The leading brands lost some share to private label products in 2011.

Multiples lead but pet shops remain popular

Pet shops represented the leading distribution channel for dog and cat food in 2011. In other pet food and pet care products, pet shops remained the most important distribution outlets as well. Pet shops are still very popular with pet owners as they employ staff that can give advice and make recommendations. Pet superstores in shopping centres (Pet Center is one of the leading chains) are becoming popular thanks to their special price offers and discounts. Second position is held by supermarkets/hypermarkets with 34% market share.

Growth expected over forecast period

The pet care market is expected to continue to grow moderately over the forecast period. The number of pet owners will continue to rise steadily, as will demand for high quality products. In particular, pet owners living in urban areas will become more interested in premium and super-premium products. Growth over the forecast period will continue to be driven by dog and cat food.

Cat Food in Slovakia - Category Analysis

HEADLINES

TRENDS

  • The health and wellness trend is growing in cat food and is expected to dominate sales in 2011. In wet cat food this will be driven by pieces of meat in sauce (chunks) with added ingredients such as vegetables, sunflower oil, minerals and vitamins. In dry cat food, the emphasis is on nutritional value. Cats are more demanding in terms of flavour than dogs, and so manufacturers offer a wide spectrum of flavours. The most saleable flavours remain chicken, poultry, beef and fish (salmon and tuna).

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Mars SR, Ani-pet spol sro and Nestlé Slovensko sro remained the leading players in cat food. In 2011 the multinationals Nestlé Slovensko sro (with its most popular brands Darling and Friskies) and Mars SK (with its popular brands Kitekat and Whiskas) together held a combined 43% value share. However, they were separated by domestic company Ani-pet spol sro with its Animonda brand. This company successfully retained second place with a value share of just over 7% in 2011.

PROSPECTS

  • Over the forecast period cat food is expected to see a positive volume CAGR of 2%. This performance will be thanks to consumers’ changing lifestyles, which include owning a pet. Cat humanisation will influence the growth of special products which emulate indulgent human food, using specialities such as fish (salmon, cod, tuna and caviar), herbs (rosemary, sage and basil), vegetables responsible for the healthy development of cats, as well as fruit or exotic herbs (blueberries, aloe vera and ginseng).

Dog Food in Slovakia - Category Analysis

HEADLINES

TRENDS

  • Dog food recorded yet another growth year in 2011 thanks to the continuous interest of pet owners in quality feed for their dogs. Dog owners are much more willing to buy premium branded products than cat owners. Sales in 2011 topped EUR54 million for the first time, with the strongest growth coming from dog treats. Both wet and dry food saw solid growth, with rates well above those expected across Western Europe.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Chappi and Pedigree from Mars CR, Tesco’s private label products and Friskies from Nestlé Slovensko sro remain the most popular and best-known offerings in Slovakia. The best known domestic brands include Supra Adult Maxi, Cobby's Pet Economy and Simba pes. Private label products in general held a strong position in 2011, accounting for a 23% value share.

PROSPECTS

  • All types of dog food are set to perform well over the forecast period. Dog food as a whole is expected to see a 2% CAGR in volume terms over the forecast period. Economy dry dog food and premium wet dog food will achieve the highest value growth rates, up by 16% and 13% respectively in value terms over the forecast period. Especially dry dog food is expected to perform better than wet dog food due to traditional aspects as people are used to feed their pets with dry food. Dry dog food was always more popular than wet dog food.

Other Pet Food in Slovakia - Category Analysis

HEADLINES

TRENDS

  • Unlike in dog and cat food, the pet humanisation trend is not particularly noticeable in other pet food due to the characteristics of the pets covered by this category, such as fish, birds, small mammals and reptiles. Social interaction with these types of pets is not as significant as with dogs and cats.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • German company Vitakraft-Werke Wührmann & Sohn was the leader in other pet food in 2009, with an 18% value share. The company produces brands for small mammals, reptiles and birds. The second producer in 2009 was AQUA Exotic with a 10% value share, followed by domestic company Tatrapet Liptovsky Mikulas with 9%. Fourth-ranked Nestlé Slovensko sro held an 8% value share.

PROSPECTS

  • Other pet food is set to stagnate in constant value terms as well as volume terms over the forecast period. The forecast period is expected to see interest in other pets decline. People are expected to increasingly prefer cats and dogs, reflecting the humanisation trend and their perception as regular “human” members of a household.

Pet Products in Slovakia - Category Analysis

HEADLINES

TRENDS

  • The category of pet healthcare consists mostly of various kinds of products to combat parasites, worming treatments, oral care products and shampoo for dogs and cats. In 2011 pet healthcare declined by more than 1% in current value terms. Despite declining sales, this category was further developed, and innovations were introduced reflecting knowledge regarding pets’ health conditions.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • The competitive landscape did not change significantly in 2010. None of the companies present recorded a significant decline or rise in value share. The leader in pet products, Tatrapet Liptovsky Mikulas, recorded a value share of 26% in 2010, thanks to its strong position in the majority of pet product categories. The second-ranked player in pet products was Bogdahn International GmbH & Co with a 15% value share, followed by Trixie Heimtierbedarf GmbH & Co KG on 11%.

PROSPECTS

  • The category is predicted to stagnate over the forecast period. Only other pet products is set to grow by nearly 8% in constant value terms over the forecast period. This growth is due to the increasing number of more sophisticated owners and stronger promotional activity in special pet magazines and on pet-related websites.

                                                  Methodology

                                                  Methodology

                                                  Global insight and local knowledge

With 40 years’ experience of developed and emerging markets, Euromonitor International’s research method is built on a unique combination of specialist industry knowledge and in-country research expertise.

This approach is what enables us to achieve our goal of building a market consensus view of size, shape and trends across the full distribution universe of each category. We factor in whichever channels are relevant, from large-scale grocery to direct sellers, from discount stores to local mom-and-pop outlets.

                                                  Industry specialists

Each industry we cover is managed by an Industry Manager and team of Industry Analysts who research and report on their specialist categories all year round.

Our collaborative approach to research means that these industry teams are in constant dialogue with industry players and opinion formers. The planning of our research programmes reflects latest market trends and industry events. In completing each update project, this provides invaluable input to the testing, review and finalisation of our data.

The specialist in-house teams bring together findings from all stages of the annual research process. They work closely with in-country analysts, assess and challenge data and exercise final editorial control over the publication of new data and analysis.

                                                  Country and regional analysts

Our in-country analyst network is managed by country and regional analysts in our offices around the world. Working closely with each in-country team, the regional research management team ensures that all country researchers are well schooled in best practices, from the information collected in store checks, to the dialogue we build in trade surveys. Our country analysts ensure that national reports explain the data trends and provide clear insights into the local market’s dynamics.

                                                  In-country research network

To deliver fresh insights every year in countries all around the world, we believe the strongest approach is to use analysts on the ground. They bring fluency in local language, physical proximity to the best sources, an ability to engage directly with local industry contacts, and an awareness of how the products and services we study are advertised, sold and consumed. These are essential parts of our ability to report incisively on these markets.

                                                  Research Methodology

                                                  Our research methods

Each Euromonitor International industry report is based on a core set of research techniques:

                                                  Desk research

With industry events, corporate activity, trends and new product introductions tracked year round by our industry team, desk research provides a starting point for the in-country research programme. Our in-country researchers will access the following sources:

                                                  • National statistics offices governmental and official sources
                                                  • National and international trade press
                                                  • National and international trade associations
                                                  • Industry study groups and other semi-official sources
                                                  • Company financials and annual reports
                                                  • Broker reports
                                                  • Online databases
                                                  • The financial, business and mainstream press

Accessing sources is only the first step. The ability to interpret and reconcile often conflicting information across multiple sources is a key aspect of the added value we provide.

                                                  Store checks

Store checks are an integral part of our methods for product industries. Carried out on the ground across a relevant mix of channels, the information gained provides first-hand insights into the products we are researching, specifically:

                                                  • Place: We track products in all relevant channels, selective and mass, store and non-store
                                                  • Product: What are innovations in products, pack sizes and formats?
                                                  • Price: What are brand price variations across channels, how do private label’s prices compare to those of branded goods?
                                                  • Promotion: What are marketing and merchandising trends, offers, discounts and tie-ins?

Findings are cross-referenced with brand share data analysis. The results, combined with the findings of desk research, provide a strong basis for identifying key areas of questioning to take forward into our trade survey.

                                                  Trade survey

Interaction with global players at corporate HQ and regional levels is complemented by unique local data and insights from our in-country trade surveys around the world. Through the high profile of the Euromonitor International brand, we are able to talk directly to a wide range of sources and therefore inform our analysis with the knowledge and opinions of the leading operators in the market.

                                                  Trade surveys allow us to:

                                                  • Fill gaps in available published data per company
                                                  • Generate a consensus view of the size, structure and strategic direction of the category
                                                  • Access year-in-progress data where published sources are out of date
                                                  • Evaluate the experts’ views on current trends and market developments

In building our composite industry view, we engage with a variety of personnel in key players at all points of the supply chain: materials suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and service operators. We also interview desk research sources: industry associations; study groups; and third party observers from the trade and financial press.

Our objective is to engage in conversation with trade sources in which we exchange ideas and views on the industry, sharing our work-in-progress findings on supply/demand dynamics and potential. This dialogue enhances both parties’ understanding of the local market. The scope and reach of our trade survey also serves to eliminate bias (intentional and unintentional) from any single source.

                                                  Company analysis

At a global level, our company research combines our mix of industry interaction and use of secondary sources such as annual accounts, broker reports, financial press and databases. From a data perspective, the aim is to build “top-down” estimates of major players’ total global and regional sales.

At a country level, in line with local reporting requirements, we access annual accounts, national-specific company databases and local company websites. These are all invaluable sources as we build a view of each domestic player’s size and position within very specific categories of the industry.

                                                  Forecasts

Data projections and future performance analysis are key elements of Euromonitor International’s market intelligence. Working with historic trends of 15 years or more, a key aspect of our trade survey is to engage industry insider views of the next five years. Will volumes maintain their historic trend? Will price increases or falls of recent years continue, accelerate or slow down? Will increasing demand for one product cannibalise sales of another?

Forecasts represent many of the essential conclusions we have reached about the current state of the market, how it works and how it behaves under different macro and micro conditions. Our written analysis will state the assumptions and the trade opinion behind whether our predictions are optimistic or pessimistic, so that clients can use our statistical forecasts with confidence.

                                                  Data validation

All data is subjected to an exhaustive review process, at country, regional and global levels.

The interpretation and review of sources and data inputs forms a central part of the collaboration between industry teams and country researchers. Numbers are delivered to regional and global offices with an audit trail of sources and calculations to allow for a thorough evaluation of data sense and integrity.

Upon completion of the country review phase, data is then reviewed on a comparative basis at regional and then at a global level. Comparative checks are carried out on per capita consumption and spending levels, growth rates, patterns of category and subcategory breakdowns and distribution of sales by channel. Top-down estimates are reviewed against bottom-up regional and global market and company sales totals.

Where marked differences are seen between proximate country markets or ones at similar developmental levels, supplementary research is conducted in the relevant countries to confirm and/or amend those findings. This process ensures international comparability across the database, that consistent category and subcategory definitions have been used and that all data has been correctly tested. We make sure that possible discrepancies between different published sources have been reconciled and that our interpretation of opinion and expectation from each country’s trade sources has been applied to form a coherent international pattern.

                                                  Market analysis

Another integral part of all our research programmes is that all Euromonitor International data is accompanied by clear written analysis. From a research perspective, this explains and substantiates data findings. From a client perspective, this offers unique insights into local consumption trends, routes to market, brand preferences, channel dynamics and future trends.

Our country level analysis also provides invaluable input into the ability of our central industry specialist teams to marry local insights with strategic conclusions on the direction of the market regionally and globally.
