TRENDS

  • Ready meals remains something of a niche category in Colombia, where most consumers still prefer to prepare home-cooked meals from scratch using mainly fresh ingredients. Demand for these products is also hampered by the fact that they are too expensive for lower income consumers to buy regularly, and considered an unhealthy choice by people of all income levels. Additionally, in lower and middle income households housewives usually prepare all the meals for their families on a daily basis, while maids do the same in more affluent homes, which further limits demand for ready meals. Despite all of this, in recent years the trends towards longer working hours and busier lifestyles have seen ready meals gain popularity among some consumer groups, most notably young mid-to-high income urban dwellers (particularly single people) who lack the time or inclination to cook for themselves every day.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Alimentos Zenú maintained its commanding lead in ready meals in 2013 with a value sales share of 23%. Offering several different product types and flavour variants under its flagship Zenú brand, the company was the clear leader in canned/preserved ready meals, frozen pizza and frozen ready meals. Kraft Foods Colombia SA and Don Maíz SA were the second and third leading players overall respectively, with both claiming value shares of around 5%. Kraft Foods dominated the dried ready meals category, where it offers the Kraft Macaroni & Cheese brand, while Don Maíz was the leader in chilled ready meals. Other prominent competitors in ready meals in 2013 included Doña Paisa, Productos Alimenticios Mikele, Pillsbury de Colombia, Tamales & Tamales and Productos Alimenticios La Cajonera.

PROSPECTS

  • Growth in retail volume sales of ready meals over the forecast period is expected to be slightly slower than that recorded during the review period. The slowdown will be partly due to increasing maturity, but also attributable to the growing competitive threat from foodservice operators. Nonetheless, further economic improvements coupled with the ongoing trend towards busier lifestyles in Colombia will ensure that demand for ready meals remains reasonably robust overall, especially among younger urban consumers. New launches, marketing activities and improvements in distribution will also help to sustain growth in retail volume sales. Growth in ready meals value sales at constant 2014 prices meanwhile is expected to be slightly faster than during the review period. This improvement will be partly due to price hikes imposed to offset rising production costs and other inflationary pressures. However, as income levels continue to rise, it will also be driven by trading up to more expensive products that offer greater convenience, healthier ingredients, and higher quality standards.
