The Colombian population is concentrating in big cities as a normal consequence of urbanisation during periods of economic development. Nevertheless, ready meals remains a niche category in Colombia, where most consumers still prefer to prepare home-cooked meals from scratch using mainly fresh ingredients. Demand for these products is also hampered by the fact that they are too expensive for lower-income consumers to buy regularly, and considered an unhealthy choice by people of all income levels. Additionally, in lower- and middle-income households housewives usually prepare all the meals for their families on a daily basis, while maids do the same in more affluent homes, which further limits demand for ready meals

  • Industrias de Alimentos Zenú maintained its commanding lead in ready meals in 2015 with a retail value share of 32%. Offering several different product types and flavour variants under its flagship Zenú brand, the company was the clear leader in ready meals, frozen pizza and frozen ready meals. The company has a well-established national distribution network. The company registered the strongest current retail value growth among the top five players in 2015.
