As the housing market showed some movement for the first time in years, the refrigeration appliances category also showed some improvement. In terms of volume growth, the recovery was minimal, but at least the indicators moved in the right direction, meaning that the category managed to achieve very marginal growth in 2014. In current value terms, the category registered a healthy increase of 2%, up from 1% the previous year.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Electrolux Home Products (Nederland) BV and BSH Huishoudapparaten BV remained the two leading players in refrigeration appliances in 2014. These two companies have been strong for years and continued to remain so due to the fact that both are active with more than one strong brand in this category. BSH offers the Bosch, Siemens and Neff brands, with Bosch and Neff distributed through its local partner, Willem van Rijn Huishoud-elektro BV. In 2014, the Bosch and Siemens brands performed well, registering a minor increase in share. Niche brand Neff, on the other hand, was under some pressure as it is struggling to retain its distribution.

PROSPECTS

  • A further recovery for refrigeration appliances is the most likely scenario given the fact that the housing market is already showing signs of recovery and this is expected to continue over the forecast period. The category’s recovery is expected to be limited, however, as the economic recovery will be a slow process. The recovery of the housing market is also expected to be slow as consumers will be limited in their ability to obtain a mortgage.
