About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • In recent years, busier lifestyles and economic improvements have made many Singaporeans more inclined to eat out (or order in from) hawker centres, restaurants, fast food outlets and street stalls/kiosks located close to their homes and workplaces. Together with increasing maturity, this trend means that growth in retail volume sales of sauces, dressings and condiments in 2014 is expected to be down slightly on 2013, and also slower than the CAGR for the entire review period. However, rising incomes will continue to encourage consumers who do buy sauces, dressings and condiments to trade up to more expensive products that offer higher quality standards or greater convenience. As a result, growth in current value sales in 2014 is expected to top that recorded in 2013 and equal the 5-year average.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Sauces, dressings and condiments remained highly fragmented in 2013. Woh Hup was the overall leader with a value sales share of almost 9%. This was mainly due to its leading position in wet/cooking sauces, though it was also the second leading player in oyster sauces, and finished seventh in soy based sauces. Heinz Singapore Pte Ltd and Nestlé, both of which compete in several categories, were the second and third leading players overall respectively. Other prominent players in sauces, dressings and condiments included Lee Kum Kee Co Ltd, Tai Hua Food Industries Pte Ltd, Chuen Cheong Food Industries Pte Ltd, Kraft Foods (S) Pte Ltd and Sin Hwa Dee Foodstuff Industries Pte Ltd.

PROSPECTS

  • Growth in retail volume sales of sauces, dressings and condiments over the forecast period is expected to be slightly slower than during the review period. This will be partly due to increasing maturity, though volume growth will also be tempered as economic improvements and busier lifestyles encourage consumers to eat out (or order in) more often instead of cooking at home. Nonetheless, strong consumer appreciation for the taste and convenience of various product types will ensure that retail volume growth remains reasonably healthy overall. Similarly, growth in value sales at constant 2014 prices is expected to improve steadily over the forecast period as rising incomes encourage consumers to trade up to higher priced products that offer superior quality standards, healthier ingredients, greater convenience and more exotic or authentic flavours. New launches and marketing activities will also help to sustain the positive development of sauces, dressings and condiments as a whole.
